Now that they are moving into the SD, it will be interesting to see what happens in the next few years as all of those steel fifthwheel and gooseneck hitches get bolted on top of those aluminium beds. I wonder if electrolysis will set it in? Basic chemistry fails me these days.

I would assume they have that resolved with mounting the bed to the frame, but doubt it is being considered here if it is a potential issue.

I'll wait a few years to see how that shakes out. By that time they'll have the 5.0l ecoboost with 500hp and somewhere north of 650ft/lbs of torque (totally made that up).

They'll sell like hotcakes. Just what a lot of Americans want. All the accoutrements of a car with a little bit of truck. This is the reason all I can find around here while truck shopping are $60,000 lariat, Laramie, or Denali crew cabs with wee little short 5 or 6 foot beds in them. Very few people seem to actually haul in their "trucks" today, which is why the aluminum won't be an issue for these high dollar grocery getters. I don't think a gallon of milk falling off the side will knock a hole in the bed.

I agree, its true that most folks wouldn't notice the difference since most don't use their trucks meaningfully except to pick up a bag of lawn fertilizer from Home Depot each Spring.

Although I'm a Ford truck fan, I will not buy an aluminum bodied one. I can't afford to take he risk that DW's high heels will bust thru the bed when we are loading the bed full of retaining wall blocks.

Next thing you'll hear is they are making is aluminum heads for engines or even aluminum instead of steel wheels. When will it end?

As for accoutrements, what is wrong with that? Just because I have power steering and power brakes, don't be hating me for it.

I certainly don't hate anyone for buying what they want. I just don't like that the majority of the dealerships around here order loaded short bed trucks.

The aluminum doesn't really scare me, especially since I will more then likely have some type of bed liner.

Good ole capitalism (I love it by the way..).. Supply and demand.. Trust me, if more people bought basic, long bed trucks, that is what would be on the lot. Most people want a truck so they can do that occasional haul but it is also their second 'car' and they want the luxuries. I don't blame em, I did.

You will also find many more 1/2 ton trucks that 3/4 and 1 ton trucks.. Again, most don't need a 3/4+ ton truck. I'm in my mid 60's and never needed a bigger truck until I bought a bigger RV.

I feel your pain though as all the bells and whistles add weigh and $...

Chevy made an aluminum motor block once......the Vega. Big mistake.

I wrote 'specs' for the government at one time. Different commodity, but.......you can write them stringent or not.

I understand the need for mileage. But I bet aluminum bodies aren't a long lasting thing. I might be wrong.

If anyone's a big enough dumb ass to load bricks into a truck like that then they deserve to drive a Chevy.

And a side note: Don't be fooled thinking Ford is doing you a favor to increase fuel mileage and payload. It's all about cheaper production. Aluminum is far easier in tooling and the maintenance of the production equipment. Rolls of flat aluminum is readily available. China is getting majority of the steel.

Chevy makes a lot of alum block V8's, heads, etc. Have for years.
