Interesting test. I have the 3.5 turbo with a 3.55 rear end. I am only pulling a Pop up but always full and a full bed. I love it. Shifts well up and down grades.

We have the 2015 F-150 XL Supercab 2WD with the 2.7 eco pulling a 2015 FR micro lite 21DS. Truck setup is: 2.7 eco, 3.31 axle, factory tow package, 36 gal tank, 300~350 miles per tank when towing 700~850 miles per tank truck only. Truck tow rating is 7600lbs. Andersen WD/anti sway system. Towing mpg 12~9.5, Truck only mpg 26~30 mpg. Truck tows usually in 5th gear highway speeds (55-65) plenty of power up hills and mountains trip out west to Yellowstone last year, very happy with truck and TT

No matter what Ford and the owners of these trucks claim, making power creates heat. Heat destroys engines. No way will these trucks have a service life of that with a larger engine. Towing a 5th wheel with an engine not much bigger than my Honda Accord's engine just doesn't make sense to me.

That engine is the scariest thing I have ever heard of.

Fine if you want to tug a jet ski or ski doo.

But for heavens sake.....

No one should ever tow with a 6cy motor. They just can't develop enough HP.

Sounds like all the posts are from qualified automotive engineers and designers say it can not be used! MIKE22 has real world experience towing with the 2.7. Thanks for posting your results and suitable use for this engine and truck!

Also the 2.7 is a great grocery getter for the family. Throw a tonneau on there and you have an all purpose vehicle. Better than other options for lightweight towing.

I ran a inline 300 6 in my E250 for 100,000 km for work. Drove that van hard. It was a ex courier van and had 250,000 km on it. I rebuilt the tranny at 320,000. That was I did except tires. Smaller engines sometimes can work just fine.

I've towed with a 2001 4.0L V6 4.10 rear end Explorer for years. It tows just fine whether on the flats or up 5 and 6 percent grades. Admittedly it isn't going to win any races up the mountains when towing but it has enough power to keep a reasonable speed without stressing the engine or drive train.

We just replaced the Explorer with an F-150 2.7L Ecoboost and 3.73 rear end. I have not finished setting it up for our trailer but I don't expect any issues or problems with towing nor it not lasting as long as our Explorer has. Do I expect to tow a 5th wheel or other large trailer with it? No I don't however it is plenty for our current trailer loaded weight of 3.1 K lbs and will be more than adequate for what we expect to be our next trailer with a loaded weight in 5K-6K lb range.

I sure hear a lot of good thing about the Ecoboost trucks. Most are the 3.5 and not the 2.7 . But sure enjoy seeing all the good reports. Seems Ford has found a place in the market for a v6 turbo.

The 2.7 is extremely powerful and has nice torque curve characteristics; better than most any 1/2 ton V8. I would not hesitate to tow with it. Don't be put off by old school points of view. The engine is very robustly engineered.

The world and technology is changing.

Torque is more important for towing then horsepower.

Yeah and the Ram CTD has constantly lost towing tests to the Dmax and the Scorpion. Not always but usually.
