I recently read that the most popular Ford Super Duty combination is the 250 with the diesel engine. Given the wide disparity between what it can pull vs what it can haul (payload), this surprises me. And I doubt that the disparity of this combination is brand specific. 2,000 payload is half ton territory nowadays.

Many understand what it can carry and pull is much different than what the sticker states. That is probably why it remains so popular.

Many also understand there is a huge difference between a 3/4-ton and a 1/2-ton. Between the brakes, springs, frame, driveline, full-floater axles, weight, etc., the sticker does not paint the whole picture.

That is what makes a 3/4 great for large TTs. However, payload of a diesel 3/4 is most often too light for all but the smallest and lightest 5ers.

You missed my point. The "sticker" says what you are saying. My point was, many people understand the true ability is beyond the "sticker". That is the reason the combination is so popular. Many do not concern themselves with the sticker ratings.

... but I'm not trying to turn this into one of "those" threads.

The sticker is no different than a speed limit sign. When it says 65 you can still do 90 if not concerned.

Those signs are only a suggestion.

Here's my weights. I'm taking more tomorrow.

2016 F150xlt 3.5L SCAB ecoboost, 145", 4x4, max tow package, 36gl tank weight with full fuel and cargo and driver and passenger 5780 (no trailer)

FR Shockwave 31' total length loaded 8290

Tongue weight 1010 (12%)

Total weight truck and trailer 14060 (per scale)

Husky centerline wdh

All tires balanced, 44psi front, 46psi rear and 65psi trailer tires.

Sticker max payload 1901, actual 1570

I'm getting axle weights tomorrow but I know they are well within. Oh, the above is without fresh water. I have put in 50gl of water and will reweigh the tongue weight. With the water, the trailer weight calculates to 8705lbs.

I'm pulling nearly the same weight, but on my Ram 2500, the tires carry 65# front, 80# rear. If you get too much tail waggin' the dog, I'd go with E rated LTs.
Too bad you didn't get the HD Payload option... your truck would be rated above 2500# cargo. I'm close to pulling the trigger on a new F250 gasser with its 3100# cargo rating... really wanted to do the F150 Max Tow, HD Payload. The attraction is the higher fuel economy when not towing. I just hope the 250 gets better than 15 not towing If I could afford it, I would get a VW Jetta diesel for a daily driver... but then again, I don't drive every day.

I agree pay load is probably going to hurt you I had a northtrail I pulled with 2014 eco boost I upgraded the tires and had timbren airless bags on it. Along with roush stage 1 even before the extras power was never the problem. It was tongue weight of 980 + pounds when loaded with supplies my 300 pound butt my wife and child it was over-payload not safe even though I towed with it. Between being overloaded and fuel mileage I moved to f350 upgraded to 5th wheel get better mileage with the diesel

Update: I bought the F-250 4x4 gasser. I have not towed the TH yet. But I have bought a Northstar Laredo SC truck camper and it does pretty good. Fuel economy is 13.5 - 15.0 no camper, and 9.5 - 11.2 with. I suspect if I towed my now heavy 29HFS, I would get 9 or worse. If mpg was a big deal, I wouldn't be RVing. I probably should have more carefully considered a F350 SRW to be sure I had enough truck, but didn't know how rough the ride might be. I've added 5000# air springs, wireless compressor, and Hellwig anti-sway bar. But, no more diesels for me.

Note: parked at a neighbors RV site next to mine

Sharp looking rig I love my 2016 F350. I have a disease of finding reasons to buy new trucks. I think the 350 has cured that problem. Although I love the look of the new ford superdutys. I towed my last trailer with 4 different tow vehicles a 2012 2500 Cummings, 2014 Tundra, 2014 eco boost and 350. I can honestly say none were underpowered. The Tundra even impressed in the Rockies Cascades and Sierras. Enough so that I would say I out pulled most diesel going up hills. Only to see them pass me at the pump. That said the Cummings and Powerstroke gave me better mileage towing and about the same empty, as the gasser but the diesel(3/4 1 ton) came with the piece of mind and big boy diesel pumps. At almost 56ft in total length pulling into a gas pump wasn't always fun or easy especially in bigger busier cities. Pilot helps with rv lanes but those aren't as frequent as needed. So still learning how to post should only be one pic but you know that old truck could probably tow ( not likely) that 5er but doesn't mean I should try it
