foreward and back surging

I know there are pin boxes to stop this fore and back surging after hitting road bumps. What I would like to know is what causes it??

It is called chucking and it is due to slop in the pin and hitch which seem like not much but when towing it tends to amplify the problem Thus that is why they use rubber in the mor ryde pin box tends to asorbe the fore and aft sensation.

Chucking

Thanks for the answer. Now then, our 5th is brand new, 2" pin and the hitch is a new Husky 16k., slider. Should I be looking for a method to tighten up this slop or is it something that is non-adjustable and we just live with it--other than changing the pin box?

You will have a certain amount otherwise it would be to tight to function correctly plus there is also a certain amount of flexing frame twist and give that is not much but like I said it amplifys on some roads because of dips chuck holes roadway splices ETC. plus the weight of the trailer and You get that in the back and forth that you feel on a new trailer and lighter weight you probally won't feel as much nothing to worry about though unless it bothers you also on long trips it seems you are more sensitive to it but short trip not so much in my experiance.

I'm glad you asked this question. I've wondered about it myself. There is some road construction where they are four laning a highway between home and one of the state parks that we frequent. When I hit some of the dips in that over 40 mph, it's like trying to ride a mechanical bull! Glad to know I'm not the only one and that it isn't unusual.
