Frustrated!

2012 CCSB chev d-maxx, 2015 piper 355 re with trail air rotaflex. B&W t/o with 3500 companion. Chucking! Jar your teeth chucking. What do I do? Brakes are set light, camper tv seem level. Roads are bad, understand this doesn't help, but not knowing it's back there. Never. And I read somewhere on the forum that airbags and the rota flex will work against each other?

Man, I'm sad to hear this. I thought the Trail Air Rotaflex was supposed to help with that quite a lot.

Shocks would certainly help, at least mine do.

Shocks will help, to a certain point. Installed on mine, but still get chucking, I'm sure it helps more on shorter, lighter trailers. Not sure it will ever go away. What the shocks did accomplish, was to recover from the big dips much faster and took away a lot of bounce being transferred to the truck. Did very little for chucking.

If I understand chucking, it is caused by worn/loose pin jaws, worn pin, hitch not solidly locked to rails.

When we first got ours, the 4 legs on our Reese 16K hitch had about 1/16" gap between the rail and the leg. I cut and welded 0.075" thick steel shims and now have to drive the pins in, but there is no chucking. When they put the slider in originally, it was much worse which is why we had it removed.

It takes less than 1/8" total "slop" in the hookup to make it a nightmare inside the cab. At least it did on mine.

I've studied it. New camper, new hitch, all tight. Lube plate. I'm so worried about pin wt and cgvwr, that we're hauling lighter than with the TT. Is it possible that I don't have enough wt on the pin? That camper is trying to separate with an upward motion? Or, should I quit whining, because some chucking is to be expected with this much camper?

Did you torque the draw down bolt in the 3500's receiver?

Yes. Posted elsewhere about dealer installing and missing the drawdown plate. That'll never happen again!

Chucking originates as a truck passes over a bump in the road, the truck is "slowed" and the trailer lurches forward, then the trailer hits the bump and is "slowed", thus pulling back on the truck. The lurching and pulling (back and forth) is chucking, a bouncing action (up and down) is referred to as porpoising. When you get into a rhythm, (concrete highway expansion joints) this can all be exaggerated. I don't think you will ever be able to get rid of it completely, but some things do help.

No porpoising, just jerking motion. No sounds, and if anything was loose, I'd think I would hear it. Smooth stops and starts. Shocks are probably the way to go. And slowing down on our Louisiana back roads. And front roads! Lol!

We're talking putting shocks on the trailer as a possible solution.

Some chucking problems are from too light of a pin weight. If you don't carry water with you, try filling up the tank as it may help(depending on where the actual tank is in the frame). Doesn't hurt anything and only takes a few minutes to try. My camping buddy just bought a new Wildcat and had the same problem. Added water and made it much better. He has since drained it, but rearranged some stuff in the nose to help.

Yes. Sorry. Shocks for the truck, not trailer.
