I have noticed no difference in MPG with or without a hard tonneau cover, towing, or not, with all of my trucks since I started using tonneau covers in 2008 — four different Silverados, all with 8’ beds and SRW — 2004 gas 2500HD, 2005 Duramax 3500HD, 2015 gas 3500HD, 2016 gas 3500HD.

The covers are for more "Sponsorship Decal Area"! I have done much research on MPG increase using Toppers/Shells/Hard and Soft Covers! The Real way to Increase MPG is "SLOW DOWN your MPH"! Youroo! !

They certainly help with both top speed and economy on racing trucks. Part of it is what is a noticeable increase. On a race truck if you could get just one more lap than the other guy or one more mph top speed you will do it but you are talking a 1 or 2% gain which will be more pronounced at 100 mph. They would run aeroshell type caps but they are not allowed to. Look at some of the special car back windows added for Nascar back in the day. Many cars had flat/upright back glass like a Charger or a Monte Carlo. They filled in the sail panels on the Superbird and added a fastback type rear window to the Monte Carlo SS Aero coup. Those things really made a difference at 200 mph. What works there will also work at 70 just to a lesser degree and can you ever notice a 2% change in economy with all the other variables out there?

Saw no difference in mpg with topper. Thinking added weight of topper plus tendency to add more stuff to the safe protected area probably has negative effect. Have 2013 GMC 2500 diesel 4WD.

I believe that the stated weight for both toppers on my old Dodge and the one I used to have on my curent Chevy was around 250 pounds...

My WDH setup with all the associated pieces weighed in around 150-175 pounds...and my Reese 16K Pro slider hitch, according to the Reese website, weighs 281 pounds.

Sounds like you need a 3/4 ton just to carry hitch parts !!!

I'd have the camper shell even if it cost me mileage.
