Fueling up at truck pumps?

Question for Those of you that fill up at truck pumps? Do you use a standard credit card? On my recent adventure to pick up our Sabre in OH from NE, I tried three times to use truck pumps but none would allow it as they were non-taxed commercial pumps only. ?? Wasn't an issue, but it's be nice to use the truck pumps

Did you use a debit card?

I fill up @ the big rigger pumps all the time however, when out of state and using my debit card I have to manually select "credit card" or it will not work as debit.
I've not had any problems in Iowa,Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana using the big boys pumps.

Often times you can't start the pump around back. Their readers are for "fleet cards" - not your run of the mill credit card.

I do have an RV card with Pilot/Flying J that lets me start the pump.

Generally, I'll pull up to the pump and my wife heads inside. She'll authorize the pump for just a little more than we estimate I'll need (e.g. $125 for a $100 fill-up). She usually calls me when the pump is on, but there is almost always some kind of visual indication that it has been activated. She'll either go to the bathroom inside and wait for the receipt or she'll come out and potty in the camper. In the latter case, the truck stop will automatically credit the difference.

In fact, I've not found one that I *could* start with a credit card.

X2. If you are a Good Sam member, in many cases you can start the pumps with your membership card at Pilots/Flying J.

Back when I had a gasser I loved the Flying J's for their RV pumps at a separate fuel island that dispensed both gas and diesel.

I have started the simply stick to the RV lanes any more... I have found they are just so much easier for us. But, I also carry two 5 gallon cans just in case I need to park fill them by hand.

I wonder if that is an east coast vs. Midwest thing.

So- to be clear; at a truck stop (say Loves)- you're able to pull around back, start the pump with your standard bank debit card to crappy credit card, pump, and drive off without going inside?

If so, I'm definitely trying my debit/credit card more often. I had all but given up on the ability to start the pump.

I have & do use the big rig pumps often but sometimes you have to go in first & get pre-authorized. The manager tried to get me to get a fleet card (At a Pilot in SC). Their small diesel pump (car islands) did not have room when pulling a trailer .

I've had good luck at Pilot/Flying J using the RV Rewards (Good Sam) card. Swipe the card, enter your "activation" number, fill up and leave. No need to go inside, and you get $0.06 off each gallon. At the end of the month the bill gets paid out of my checking account.
I'm not sure, but some truck pumps have higher taxes than the RV lanes for diesel (Indiana is one state that does this). Maybe an OTR trucker can clear this point up.

In PA, VA, NC, SC, GA, and Fl, I have had to go inside to get the truck pumps started. As said before, one goes in while the other stays with the rig to fuel it up. We either use the walkie cell phones to communicate.

Just got back from a 5,000 ride and 3 out of 4 truck stops I needed to go inside to prepay for my diesel at the truck pumps. DW blames me for not taking card of my card.

We signed up for a Petro Pass card ....it's a fleet card but we managed to get one ...a couple of cents off per litre and allows us to use commercial pumps all across Canada and US ....and we could also use their facilities

I have noticed that Pilot/Flying J have RV pumps with gas & diesel at some of their locations. That helps take the pressure off having to clear the pump because the semi's are waiting behind you. But then I miss shooting the bull with the semi drivers and getting first hand road reports.
