Gas mileage
Is anyone pulling a 28 footer 5th wheel with 1/2 ton truck? What type of gas mileage are you getting?
Thanks

Is 28' fiver mpg important when payload on the 1/2T PU is exceeded?
Pass the popcorn.

Might be important when its on a 1/2 ton without the payload exceeded.

28' isn't that long for a 5er. Modern 1/2 tons have payloads that can easily exceed 2,000 lbs. Without knowing a whole lot more about the OP's configuration, this isn't immediately obvious that this is a case where payload is exceeded.
In general, all vehicles will be in the 7-12 mpg range for economy when towing these massive boxes behind them. Could be less when going up mountains. Could be a bit better with a tailwind and going downhill.

I get great mileage when going down hill. I turn the rig around and let the trailer tow the tv. Problem is it doesn't always stay on the intended path.
Sorry, sometimes I just can't help myself.

Ah, these type threads are always good for entertainment. I try to not read them, but I can't help myself. Kinda like tire threads.
I still maintain, if you are RVing, and worried about fuel mileage, you have the wrong hobby
Fuel mileage when towing is going to suck when compared to not towing. Not enough difference in any towing setup to make a significant difference. Like someone else said, it's usually an average between 7 and 12, depending on the circumstances.

Toss in the "Diesel" and you get a few more mpg +/-.

I didn't find that to happen in my case when switching from gas to diesel. Bigger truck, bigger/heavier towable. Much easier towing the bigger load, but mpg didn't change a whole lot.

I do not pull a 28 footer fifth wheel... but my observations are...
the frontal area of a trailer is a big sail to pull through the air...
Much depends on your engine...
alot also depends on flat land or mountainous towing and SPEED of the TV
and another BIG thing is which way is the wind blowing, frontal or tail wind...
All that said, you will probably get at least 6 MPG, but probably no more than 11 MPG. I would figure 7 to 8.5 average doing 60-65 on relatively flat land.
Many agree to use your Tow/Haul mode for the best MPG

This is the OP's first post in a year, so it may be awhile for a response.
Definitely need way more info. It appears that they may own a 2015 Ram 1500 short bed. The truck's probable low payload capacity and short bed, may make a 5th wheel a no go.

Like you say... 'Definitely need way more info.' It amazes me that "contributors" can make definitive statements about the do-ability of something with no more information than this.

Not much point in further conversation if the OP is not going to respond.

Yes I did. Not Any More
Yes, I pulled my 28' fiver with my Tundra for 10 years.
I got about 8 mpg on average. Plenty of power but it's still just a 1/2 ton suspension.
I just recently bought a 2019 GMC 2500 HD Diesel. Same trailer.
Holy Cow! What a difference.
I now see what others were saying. It is a completely different experience now.
Crawl up under your 1/2 ton and then crawl up under a 3/4 ton. You will see what I mean.

I've got an '18 Chevy 2500 HD extended cab - basic work truck trim level. Payload is 3340 lbs. If diesel weighs 800 lbs you payload is about 2100 lbs????

A tale of two cities (trucks)
Same trailer: 32.5' Rockwood Signature Ultra-light 7400lbs ready to go.. fully loaded.
Same route: Georgia to the upper Midwest (Wisconsin, Minnesota, Nebraska, Iowa and back to Georgia.
2017: towing with a 2010 Escalade ESV 425hp 6.2 V8. Normally gets 18-20 MPG. Towing: 6-7mpg. Stopping every hour and a half for gas.
2019: Towing with a 2007 F350, 6.0 Powerstroke, deleted, tuned Crew Cab LWB Dually. Normally gets 14-15 MPG, towing 12.5 - 13 MPG. Can drive 4-5 hrs at a time without stopping. Much better.
My Diesel gets twice the MPG's when towing.

OK, the OP is asking about GAS mileage with a 1/2 ton towing a 5th wheel.
NOT diesel mileage nor 3/4 ton.

My FIL 2019 Silverado 2500 crew cab diesel is 2236 payload. LT trim level middle of the road options. So you are pretty close with what you stated.

Very valid point. Easy to stray I think when others ( me included ) kind of leave the subject. [emoji106]
