Just wanted to bump some 6.4 figueres. Running lightly loaded no trailer with a crosswind at 70-75 mph hand calculated at 14.02 mpg. Pulling the wildcat 313RE my initial numbers are 7.42 mpg at 65. This is through the hill country with mild grades and crosswind with stop and go traffic in the smaller towns. With 3.73 gears I am sitting in 5th gear @ 2000 rpm, 4th @ 2500 rpm, and 3rd bumps it to 3500 rpm. I am very pleased with the power. My last gasser was a 96 f250 CC 4x4 460 5 spd, the 6.4 very much reminds me of towing with my 03 5.9 HO with quicker hole shots and higher rpm's topping out a hill.

I am running regular unleaded and I am finding it for 2.63-2.79 and diesel is running 3.39-3.69.

I start a new thread when I get back. I just wanted to bump a quick update.

I agree the numbers aren't great but I can qualify them with my own 6.7 and very similar milage numbers. I still wouldn't go back to the gasser though.
The extra power and control are well worth whatever the extra cost of going diesel might be.
Maybe we should open a new thread on how others have solved/improved their milage problems. I'd personally enjoy hearing about what reasonable and legal options others have had success with.

I'm at 5-6 mpg better either way.

getting 125 to 130 more miles per tank full better mpg.

Now for you all paying attention.
Using rough figures.
At a tank a week that's roughly $40.00 savings.
Over a year that's roughly $2000.00
And that's only one tank a week!

$4000.00 at two tanks a week.

Diesel up charge gets smaller quick!

7 mpg was my break even point. Pulled about 250 miles today. 60-65 mph through Arkansas several small town but ran cruise mostly. Hand calculations are at 8.9 with light and mixed winds. I never felt under powered and did quite a bit of passing.

My biggest concern going in was power and I haven't been disappointed. I do miss the exhaust break But the tranny does a good job. It feels lighter than the 3500 but I must say ( wether it's the coils or the airbags) this is the smoothest riding truck I have ever owned. It is quiet as well.

I miss the turbo spooling also but love that V8 rumble in when I get on it.

lol well legal depends on the state and reasonable depends on you mechanical ability and physical flexibility lol

if you can gain 20 to 40 hp and rduce fuel consumption by 4 mpg then how is that not better across the board?

Salt Shaker i bet you like the power of the 6.4! that is a compound turbo diesel!!

i still have the good old 7.3 but uncorked and 100 hp over. now with my 295 wp 5er at 75 mph in rolling hills fighting 45 mph winds ( gusting) i was down to 7.5 mpg even down to 60 mph. in 10 to 15 mph wind at 75 mph on the interstate through nebraska and kansas i get 9.5 mpg at my best and this is with 3.73 gears 4x4, 6 speed handshaker, quad cab dually. i do miss my 4.10 gears they did get better mpg's but didn't know that when i changed so, oh well i just turned 92k miles so i have a ways to go before she's wore out at 400k miles lol

For those of us that live behind the "ZION Curtain" i.e. Utah, the emissions laws are pretty stiff. I can survive the milage costs and still consider the extra power and tow capabilities of the diesel well worth the upgrade cost. Would it be nice to have the extra HP and better milage?? YOU BET. Just can't get it done here and still pass inspection. I guess I was hoping for some magic bullet

Gotta love those 7.3s. My cousin was a dyno man at international. A compound turbo...oh yeah...gotta be careful or else I may bend my Johnson rod.

i do get 18 mpg empty at 75 wind or not down the interstate. and yes i love the good ole 7.3 but the new 6.7's are looking really good !! my brother in law bought a new one and uncorked it with tuner. he's getting 22 mpg empty and 18 towing according to the dash. i pencil mine out using the odometer. ( towing a 40 foot flatbed with a corn head on it at 65 mph)

i hear ya and no magic bullet just to much back pressure and engines are basically air pumps so the better the pump the better he efficiency and lower egt's. i turned mine up 100 hp and gained 4 mpg with supporting mods.

I saw a piece on ABC news where they found gas in Oklahoma for under $2.00 but diesel was still selling for $3.49. Why the disparity?

22 hwy I could believe all day (heck mine was getting 20 bone stock b4 I lifted it and stuff)

18 Towing what?.. I know with my rv trailer if I ever saw better than 15 hwy at 65mph id question my own sanity...flatbed or boat it'll do 16-17 all day...

for you 6.7 fans out there, you may want to keep an eye on your radiator for leaks. Google the problem and do some homework.

funny you should mention that...

Noticed on a few days last week a small, < 6" diameter wet spot on the ground under the left corner of front bumper... Looked it up on the ford forums, several people with same wet spot..
Luckily I have the Ford ESP so it will be covered, apparently it is a $1800 repair at dealer or buy your own rad for around $1K and do it yourself.
