Gas or diesel

I have decided that the F150 I have is just not going to cut it with the trailer I have. Have an opportunity to get a pretty good deal on some 2015 350 Super Duty trucks coming available in a couple of weeks with very low mileage on them. Some are 6.7 diesel and some are 6.2 gas. Are there any here who have the 6.2 gas in a 350 Super Duty and how are the real numbers for mileage and power. I realize the diesel is going to have a lot more power however the price different is about $10,000 and the cost to service, repair will be less as well.

that's a huge price difference for used. It isn't that much of a gap for new. As far as repair cost, everything is expensive these days. Keep in mind, that diesel has a life span 2-3 times as long, so of course you will spend more over time. You will get at least 50% better fuel economy with the diesel, and twice the torque for pulling.

Certainly not my experience. I didn't see any improved fuel mileage going from gas to diesel. I do agree that you get more power, but depending on the load, a gasser may provide sufficient power.

I went from 7 to 12 MPG and that was with upgrading to 4000lb heavier trailer at same time

I Don't drink this Kool-Aid myself...especially with all the emissions crap the manufacturers are required to put on diesels these days. Modern gas engines are extremely reliable.

As to price, when I bought my 04 Duramax truck in 07, a diesel engine added $6000 to a used vehicle (all else equal) but only $5000 for new trucks. A diesel on a new truck is now about 8-9k, so I would believe $10 for used late model....It's supply and demand at it's finest.

It all depends on how much you will be towing the trailer. Full timers tow more than vacation campers. Will the savings in fuel offset the $10,000.00 for the diesel? Check the towing guide for the gas truck. It needs to be 20% more than the trailers max weight.

I just built a truck on Chevy site. $8000 upgrade for Duramax/Allison upgrade. At 200,000 miles, a diesel will be worth almost that much more than a comparable gas truck. Resale value will always be better.

You didn't say what you are pulling..so its hard to say. How much will the truck be used other than as a TV?
I just upgraded from a F150 5.0L and pulling a 7000# straight pull, to a 2013 F250 6.7 and a 9000# FW. The 6.7 is flat out awesome. The F150 would get about 18mpg regular driving.....about 9.5 pulling. The 6.7 gets 11.7 pulling a bigger trailer.....and 19.5 general driving.

Plus' and minus's to both. Get what makes you feel good!

I just realized that I forgot to add the trailer. It's a 3008 windjammer 7220 dry so in the 8500 to 9000 lb plus other stuff in the box. Yes it would be used for daily driver as well in Alberta.

I'm with you. I've never gotten rid of a vehicle because the engine was so bad I had to dump the vehicle. It's usually something else wearing out that makes you decide it's just not worth it. In my case, it's been transmissions, suspensions, etc.

Oh, you didn't say you were from Alberta. In that case you must buy the biggest, baddest truck you can get.

I never said the diesel upgrade would make the transmission and ball joints last 3 times as long. Of course those things will wear out eventually, but the life of the engine definitely has more potential than a gas

X2 on the MPG increase. Not much of a difference when empty but a big difference when towing.

Unfortunately or luckily I drive my tv every day so the fuel savings from a gas to a diesel is WAY worth it.

2005 6.0L gas towing 8-9-10 mpg
2005 6.0L gas not towing 11-12 mpg winter and 12-14 mpg summer.

2008 6.6 duramax diesel towing 10-12 mg
2008 6.6 duramax diesel not towing winter 14-15 mpg and 18-19 mpg summer.

You have a 6.4 PSD. that has the worst mileage of any new diesel out there. That is one of the reasons Ford opted for a new design amungst others. If you got a tuner and deleted, your milage would go up quite a bit.

My buddy and I share a race car and we both have tow vehicles. He has a 3500 chevy with a gasser and max tow package on it and gets maybe 6mpg and we can only go 62-64mph in that pig with the tranny hunting all over... I have a 2014 chevy 2500 Duramax and get almost 12 towing at 72mph on cruise and it never shifts out of 6th.

I had the 6.2 F350 and it would pass everything but a gas station about 6 to 7 MPG pulling a 36' fifth wheel

As I understand it the 2010 SD F250 and others were the last year with a five speed auto.
2011's came out with a six speed and better mileage, along with alloy heads to shave off a few pounds.
