Now are you stating that you have a Cummins diesel engine? If so, what year?
I have a Cummins and I never have had my engine RPM's above 2,100. On my 2008, 6.7L Cummins the engine is at full TQ at 1500 RPM's and full HP at 3,000 RPM's. All I every need is full TQ to move anything. But to get the truck to regenerate and burn off the soot in the DPF. I needed to drive the truck between 1,500 and 1,800RPM's in any gear usually 6th for a maximum of 30 min's. MY truck when not towing would regenerate about every 300 miles or so, and when towing it would regenerate between 250 and 350 miles.

That's what is so, nice about a diesel engine you do not need full horsepower to do any work. Since the engine develops full torque at a low RPM were work can occur.
I wondered the same thing about 3000 RPM, I think the rev limiter kicks in around 3100 if I remember correctly. My Cummins has NEVER seen 3000 RPM since I have owned it!

You're not doing it any particular favors by keeping the rpms low.

The inline 6 Cummins is not designed to operate at high RPMs like the V8 designed Powerstroke and the Duramax. As mentioned in the above post, the rev limiter engages around 3100 RPM! 2000-2500 RPM IS the normal range for these motors.

According to the guys on the Cummins page it starts to de-fuel around 2900 in stock configuration with red-line at 3300. A few guys said they have run it to 3500 but it is NOT recommended on a stock motor. The common consensus is normal range is 1500 to 2500 RPM.

I was just over at the renewable energy forum reading about competing types of energy production and the various trade-offs. It was really interesting until it somehow turned into a gasoline versus diesel engine discussion.

Back on topic. I've been a gasoline engine driver my entire life. Today I test drove a Ford F350 Lariat diesel 4WD SRW standard bed crew cab. Just shy of 3,500 lb payload. Just a tad bit of turbo lag coming off the line, but that thing really went fast. Before I knew what happened, I was at 75 mph. Really quiet engine, too. Really a fun drive. Huge. My F150 is not small ... and it now feels really small.

So, to the person talking about it driving like a dragster ... I get it. Thing was really quick and nimble. Blew me away.

[Side note. Tried to drive the GMC equivalent. Got the key. Drove it up to the main office to photocopy my driver's license. Guy wanted me to fill out a background check and a credit application in order to test drive the truck. I walked out, got the family out of the truck, and went home. Sheesh.]

Oh wait, there's MIMES involved? I hate mimes. I can see that factory now: all those employees pretending to be in invisible boxes. Makes me sick just to think about it. [emoji12]
