I have a general question about towing. I just bought a new 2015 GMC Canyon. I am planning on going on a camping trip this weekend. I will be towing my Rockwood Premier pop-up camper for this first time with my new truck. I'm wondering if I need to adjust the position of where the ball is mounted on my hitch. My previous tow vehicle was a 2008 Pontiac Torrent. I'm thinking the hitch on my truck may sit a little higher than what my Torrent used to be. The tow bar that the ball is mounted on is similar to this one.
Should I measure the height of the hitch on the camper from the ground up and then measure the height of the ball on the receiver hitch of my truck and see which position of the tow bar is closer? I hope I am explaining my question properly.
You want your trailer to tow level. Adjust your trailer so it sits level and the measure to the top of the coupler. Then set your truck hitch to the same height. It may require getting a longer drop shank. I'm guessing your tongue weight is light enough to not need a wdh, is that correct? If you use a wdh, that will likely need readjustment as well.
Think you just need a hitch shank with the right height to keep your pup level. If you dont like the way it tows or sags (truck) a wdh is the next step.
If the position of the ball is too high, can I simply flip the bar over and invert the ball so it is lower?
I love my new Canyon. I can't wait to see how she does hauling my pop-up. The Torrent I had before used to struggle on big hills. I have a feeling I won't have that problem any more.
sure you can take off the ball ans flip the shank and reinstall the ball...
might be easier to juist buy a new shank and ball for this trailer...
lots of times you may be asked to tow another trailer and the old hitch might work for that...
I have 3 hitches for three different trailers... easier than flipping all the time

Yes, you can flip the hitch to lower it if that is what it takes. If it's not enough of a drop to maintain it being level you can find the correct drop pretty much anywhere hitches are sold.

Okay, I think I will mount the shank the way it is now and see how it lines up. If it's too high then I think I will flip it over and see how it lines up. If I have to I will buy a drop bar and ball.
