Give Me An EcoBoost Education

I just bought a RAM 2500 Diesel 8 months ago with my TT in the neighborhood of 8K loaded I really didn’t need a diesel but I wanted to get one regardless of the associated increase in cost and maintenance. I believe I got a good deal on it stickered around 60K and little over 20% off so in the upper 40K range the dealer threw in 4 free oil changes and discounts on parts and accessories.

Not being brand loyal I was thinking that if I didn’t buy a ¾ ton diesel from any other MFG. I believe I would have gone the Ecoboost route I do also enjoy reading the posts about them from there loyal owners so here lies my questions so I am sure there are a bunch of configurations they come in so I will go with this build scenario for towing a 3.5, 4X4, Crew Cab, moderately equipped, GPS, Towing mirrors, Max Tow, Max Payload if I forgot anything please feel free to let me know…..

Ok so what kind of base price would I be looking at ? How much are they discounted ? What are owners typically paying for them ? I’m just curious since I read a lot about them on the forum but don’t know know much other then what I read on here.

Don't know those answers. I know that Eco Boost is Ford's marketing name for a Turbo Charged and Direct Injected engine......... similar traits for a gas engine that diesels normally employ. That's it. I am NO gearhead.

Also, most folks seem to not know this......but the towing specs for a 2WD are higher than a 4WD.

Payload is usually higher on 2wd vs 4wd also

Log on to the Ford website and build one. You will be much happier with your 3/4 ton anyway and won't have to upgrade your truck if you get a bigger trailer.

I do not where you get the idea that a diesel engine truck is so expensive to operate? I have own both a gas 6.0L Chevy pick-up and my 2008 Ram 6.7L Cummins Diesel. The diesel truck is less costly to own and operate if you include fuel and maintenance items in a comparison to a gas engine vehicle. Plus diesel fuel has a higher BTU rating than gas so it is more energy dense. So in working conditions like pulling a load the truck is more efficient than a gas engine truck doing the same work.
My fuel cost through 100,000 miles is .26 cents a mile (this includes the price of diesel when it was around $4.50 a gallon in 2008) and my maintenance cost is .11 cents per mile (this includes two different set of tires and wheels; one for towing and a one for winter use).

Hi Jim, Sorry I didn't want to imply that my diesel was more expensive to operate it being my first I know the Diesel option was more $$$ but didn't really know what to expect in the way of maintenance costs so far I am happy with the MPG 14-15 around town and 11-12 towing which is alot better then my old TV a chevy 3/4 ton 6.0 gasser. I've read so much here on the forum that if you don't have a TT that isn't over X amount of weight you shouldn't bother getting a diesel it's just overkill and more $$$ whether it is or isn't I didn't really care when I bought mine it's what I wanted and in just the few camping trips that I have towed with it I wouldn't want to go back to gas again.

Maintenance costs on the Ecoboost may be higher over the long term:

Direct Injection means intake valves aren't getting "cleaned" by gas mixture. Instead the ecoboost engine has problems with carbon buildup on intake valves which requires heads to be pulled for cleaning. Expect this to happen by 60,000 miles.

Timing chain stretch. $$$$$$$$ Ford is on its 3rd design of chain IIRC and problems still occur.

Direct Injection Fuel Dilution = reduced oil viscosity and increased enigne bearing wear. Solution: use 5w40 which dilutes down to 5w30 in as little as 3k miles. Change oil every 5k. Fuel dilution has been so bad that some folks have oil levels that increase between oil changes-bad

Crank case ventilation system doesn't do what it is supposed to do. Expect buildup of oil and/or water from condensed vapors to build up in the intercooler.

Intercooler issues abound which contribute to stumbling and driveability. God knows how many revisions Ford has made to the intercooler design.

Cam phaser failure- You'd think Ford would have fixed this problem already!

https://www.google.com/search?q=3.5+...issues&tbm=vid

Fuel economy: There is no eco in the ecoboost engine. I owned an XLT shortbed ecoboost with 3.55 and a Platinum 6.5' bed with 3.73 axles and fuel economy SUCKED driving empty and abysmal when towing. My F350 beats both of my EB's in unloaded and towing fuel economy.

Vacuum pump failures have occurred reducing power brake effectiveness.

6.5 foot bed F150's: Driveline shudder and axle wrap issues. Good luck in getting dealer to even admit they feel the problem which means it'll never get fixed and Ford corporate says this is normal operation.

Also: Most F150's are grocery getters and 'status symbols'. That is why they cost so much.

Wow TonyD, that's a pretty vicious post. With words like "abound", I would be surprised to see any happy Ecoboost owners...yet, with years of internet reading, complaints come from only a few percent of owners. I see far more owners reporting 150k miles or more with NONE of the problems that you state are so common.

Yes, there is some truth in your comments, but they are the exception, certainly no more than any other current engine.

To the OP's question, mine has everything you asked for minus the HD payload option. I paid $32k out the door.

I tow about 7k loaded. I like my combination, but I'd be out of payload if my trailer went up to the 8k that you have.

I'm getting 18.2mpg on my mixed work commute. I get 22mpg in best case conditions. Right at 10mpg towing.

Nice TonyD. Grocery getters and status symbols............. Any other place and I'd call that a troll.

To the OP, I have over 134,000 on my 2011 EB. I recently retired from the Federal Gov't and used my F150 for a daily driver as well as a scout trailer tv, Assateague fishing, family camping, snow driving, long haul trips, mulch hauling, etc etc. You know. I used it. I have never had any major issues and have only ever upgraded my exhaust and recently added airlift 5000's. Now we have a RW 2703WS that comes in at about 7500# loaded and have towed it with no problems.

All trucks have some sort of issue(s) that can manifest over the long term. I don't know how many EB trucks have been sold but I would bet that the percentage of trucks that have problems is fairly low.

I always tell my children not to make fun of a another man's truck because every man LOVES his truck.

You will get views like Tony's here and there.....my stepson, the supertrucker, is a Chevvyman and will pull a trailer with a plowing harness if the alternative is a Ford.

Everyone should have a "family mechanic" like having a family doc. Talk to him.

I live in cattle country. Great numbers of ranchers are trading in their diesels for EB's. They are all practical folks who pinch pennies until they squeal.....must be sumpin' goin' on.

My ecoboost out-tows both of my last two Fords. One was a 5.4/3.73 and the other was a 5.0/3.73. The 5,0 was actually better than the 5.4...

Tony D. Who pays you to write this stuff. I have an ECO Boost towing about 12,000 lbs. for over a year now and have 16,000 miles on it and NONE of the problems you mention exist. In addition I am rewarded with a nice grocery getter when it's not working like a bull. It's really ok to like the decision you made purchasing a heavier duty truck but it's not ok to belittle someone else's decision with cherry picked problems.

So what is your point? The OP has a 3/4 ton Cummins diesel.

Give it a couple of years and GM will have a boosted V6 engine out- and it will be the best thing since sliced bread.

FWIW, my parents 2011 EB has over 100K on it now with zero issues. I take that back, they had to have it reflashed for the tranny shudder- simple fix. I'll also add this- I now have a 2015 F250 6.7PSD. Over ~7500 miles of driving the average mileage for the time I've owned it is actually about 1MPG less than I had for the 30K I put on my 2013 F150 EB. Same type of driving for both and towing the same camper.

Really all I wanted to know what options make up the best TT towing Ecoboost and what are they selling for and what discounts are offered compared to other trucks on the market.

Depends on if you got an XLT, Lariat, King Ranch etc. My 2013 XLT, 3.5 ecoboost with the max tow package, ext range fuel tank, towing mirrors, chrome package etc, sticker price was $47, 000 and change. With all the incentives they were giving on that truck it was mine for under $42,000. The 2016 King Ranch with all the same equipment plus every option they have, loading ramps, electric steps, twin panel moon roof and a million other things sticker was $68,000 and change. Ford's incentives brought it down to $65,000. and at the time I bought this one, ford was giving everyone employee pricing which brought it down to $55000. and change.

The Ecoboost in the new F150 is a great combination. I have a friend that has one and have ridden in it, definitely quicker than my hemi with 3.21 gears. I think most of the engine bugs have been worked out. (that is expected with a new engine in any make)

My main concern with it is the reported lack of engine braking in hilly/mountainous terrain with a heavy trailer. No replacement for displacement in this situation.

I have found that, in tow mode, the "computer" downshifts me to whatever is needed for downhill.

It has gone to second gear a time or two.

That, and right hand on the trailer brake controller, gives me a wide margin if safety.
