Just as a sidebar, i recently had the oil changed on my VW Passat after 15,000 kms (manufacturers recommended) and the oil was black, but also the oil filtered had half disentegrated. That means that there are little pieces of oil filter throughout the engine. 3000kms later and still not ill effects.

Wouldn't worry about pcs of the filter being throughout the engine unless they accumulate and plug an oil passage. Suggest a long drive of at least 50 miles at highway speeds and then immediately drain the oil and change the oil and filter again. Cut the filter to examine for debris. We always cut and examined the oil filters on all our race engines.

I can. Not saying I know everything and most say I am full of it. but their are lots of issues on our vehicles and yes engineers do get it wrong.
I hope I don't disappoint here, but, I can take it all apart and put it back again and guess what it will work too, been doing it for a living since 1965. I also know a few engineers that could not screw in a light bulb but on paper they do ok, also worked with some who were just natural at everything they do.

As I said before " Or of course you can just decide you know more than GM and do it your way."

On diesel engines, the oil is black 10 minutes after changing it it seems. Mine is due for oil change this weekend. Will also get an air filter too. Anybody have a cold air intake on their deisel.

I had an AFE and had lots of intermittent smoke problems, went back to stock and all good! Never could notice a difference in power.

With very few exceptions the additive package is good even after the detergent is nearly depleted. When the detergent is gone the antioxidants are not far behind etc. etc. If you don't want to fully trust the confuser put a drop of oil from the dipstick in the center of a 4"x4" section of blotter or construction paper. After about 3 or 4 hours the drop will wick out in a circle. If the detergent is good the color of the circle will be pretty uniform. With diesel there may be a slight darkening at the application spot. When the circle starts getting cleaner after about 75% out you may want to think about changing before it becomes 50%. Paper chromatography for practical applications.
Pass the popcorn, real butter?

Sounds scientific, you can always submit a small sample to a auto lube lab for a real analysis and condition/life.....

Do both and compare, could be future savings if my procedure tracks. Betcha a bowl of popcorn with real butter, no trans fats. Might even dust with some real Parmesan cheese.
