Goodyear HMG 2020 anyone?

Ok, so I go to my local NTB and ask for Khumo Radial 875's...no dice. Then I ask for Maxxis trailer tires in 205/75D14 size...nothing. Then I say, ok what DO you have in a 14" 205mm size with D range or higher that isnt a China bomb?

Goodyear HMG 2020's...something like $680 for 5 mounted and balanced. 8-ply load range D, 2040lb cap., speed rating J (62mph)

So I did some research on these tires, and come to find out that they are U-Haul branded tires

They seem to be hard to get hold of, but excellent tires from what some reviews I have found. I would imagine they would have to be since U-Haul owns the rights on them and I know their trailers take a lot of abuse. Only issue I have is the 62MPH rating...

I don't see that tread as a good highway tread. It might be a rougher ride for the TT.

Curious to see what others think.

I saw a couple good reviews from TT owners, but most were boat trailer owners. I am going to go to a local U-Haul place and see what uses them. If it is their standard trailers, I think I might give em a go. I have never had issues hauling any size of U-Haul trailers loaded to the hilt over hundreds of miles (was in the Navy so I did it more than once, lol). Still looking for a place with the Khumo's though. Will call Discount Tire later today.

Go to the Kumho website and they have a dealer locator. Any of them can order the trailer tires from their distributor.

Why would U Haul want to use a tire with a snow tread design on a trailer? Noisy and rough riding for the trailer. Stick with the Kumho ST tires.

I am with Jim on this 1. Why do you need an aggressive tread like that on a trailer tire ?? Can't be good on rolling resistance.

Need to do some more research, like looking at the tires themselves. That is a generic photo that appears on every GY dealer's webpage, along with the names of most states. The webjocky tells the N.J. dealer: "look what I did for you- if a Google search is made for *Goodyear Wyoming* guess what??, your page, along with thousands of other GY dealers in every statre, fills up page after page of the search. FWIW, the HMG2020 bias 205x14 8 ply rating has smooth ribbed (zigzag) tread, just as you would expect. Made in Canada. Truly a beautiful tire. If you find any, buy 'em!! And remove them when not in use, store them in the dark, all that good stuff. Yes, 65 mph max is probably a good limit, esp in hot weather. Do you want to be changing a flat in hot weather with 75 mph traffic whizzing by you, like I did last week??

I found a pair of these at one store- will start looking for another pair today. Kumho, if they make this size, would also be worth considering.

Wasn't an option and I was quoted at a brick and mortar NTB store. They don't stock these tires and I even had to put 20% down before they would even order them (vendor requirement, not NTB's) since they are uncommon and would have to be sent back if I didn't buy after delivery. I figured it might have been a generic GY photo, but every single search turned up just that photo. I can only work with what I am given.

Thanks for the review. These are still in my "possible" pile for change-outs.

Try Discount Tires at Bklyn Park, MN: Dave says there are several available regionally, take a few days for him to get them. Let your fingers do the walking, accept no substitutes, etc. After 500+ miles I must say I do love these HMG2020s!!

Good to hear about the Goodyear HMG2020's. I've been trying to find an 8-ply tire in 205/75R14. Originally I zeroed in on Kumho 857s, but nobody, not even tirerack.com has them in stock right now. A local shop can get me these Goodyears, and if they are my best option I might go with it. They aren't cheap, but if they are safer, I'm willing to pay premium for that!

Any further reviews from anyone who has been running them?

I've had the 14-inch Kumho D-rated and loved them. I've seen them online at Tire Rack or Discount Tire, but as someone else stated, they are not always available. A few years ago I had a mom & pop tire dealer do a search and they located the Kumhos for me in a warehouse somewhere and got them. Might be worth a try.

My Tire Rack distribution center has the Kumho 857's in stock.

I need to point out that the Kumho's are what we called Euro sized and is different from the other metric sizing you posted above. A Kumho euro sized 205R14C size is not the same as a 205/75R14...even though the numbers look similar. The Euro size tire is taller, so check your spec sheets. You might want to go down to the Euro sized 195R14C in order to be closer to the same height as a 205/75R14.

In simple terms, Euro sized tires like the Kumho 857 do not place the aspect ratio in their tire size. The aspect ratio is the percentage of sidewall height to tire width, or the 75 in the 205/75R14 tire. Very simply, In a 205/75R14, the tire sidewall is 75% as tall as the tire is wide while loaded at it's optimal pressure.

If the Euro tires did state their aspect ratio, it would be an 82...which means a Euro tire is 205/{82}R14....or the sidewall is 82% as tall as the tire is wide while loaded at it's optimal air pressure.

Also the C at the end of a Euro sized tire means it's for Commercial Use applications (heavy loads, transporters, trailers, etc)....similar to a LT designation. Do not confuse this C for a load Range as it is not that. The Load range will be somewhere else on the tire, and will most likely be a D (8 ply rated).

Just glancing at the spec sheets on Tire Rack, the Kumho 857 Euro size 205R14C tire has a diameter of 27". I compared it to a Goodyear Marathon trailer tire size 205/75R14 which has a diameter of 26.1"

A Kumho 857 size 195R14C has a diameter of 26.2" which puts it on par with the 205/75R14 if you want to keep the height the same.

Thanks wmtire, I appreciate the info, especially about the difference between the Pmetric and euro size tire. When I checked tirerack they showed instock, but their online rep said they weren't!

Tirerack lists the 195R14 as load range C, but the 205R14 as load range D, again maybe a typo.

I am giving serious thought to the Goodyear HMG 2020s. One dealer said they are bias ply, not radials, but I can't confirm. Anyone who knows the difference care to enlighten me on the pros/cons if they are?

Anyone got any feedback on the bias vs radial? Any concerns with Bias, such as needing to get the weight off them if the trailer is going to sit over the winter?

I uncovered the trailer yesterday to find the sidewalls on my RoadRider tires were dry rotted and cracked. The tire size is ST205/75R14 LOAD "C" Radial.
I have searched the forums for hours to see most of you guys have many choices on the 15" tires but the 14" are very limited. I want to upgrade to a LOAD range "D" 8 Ply tire and that is what revived this old thread. I have 2 options from what I could find. #1 is the KUMHO Radial 857 or #2 is the Goodyear HMG2020..
The goodyear would appear to be a bias ply.
Does anyone know the difference between the Radial and Bias ply tires and what the difference would be for towing.
We are going seasonal this year so all this will be for 2 tows per season.
