Grease the ball? --> Yes. Shinny's answer is my story and I'm sticking with it.

Metal rubbing on metal creates friction....friction creates heat....to much heat is not good for any metal so I try to keep my balls(hitch and sway control) well greased at all times.

Yep! I spray a little white lithium grease on all friction points on my Equalizer. Then a quick wipe down when I unhitch and everything is nicely protected from the elements!

EZ Lift manual recommends light coat of wheel bearing grease. Clean hitch and ball daily when towing.

Yes -- have used white grease spray but really like PB BLASTER.

Back when I had a TT, I used paraffin wax. Rubbed it on the ball before every trip. Chrome never wore off, and never had a mess with the grease. Plus the paraffin didn't attract dirt.

I thought the trailer grounds itself through the hitch, therefore have never greased or seen the need to.

The grounding over time would not be reliable. Dirt, rust, movement in the 2 inch receiver would disrupt a good contact. The ground is at the electrical connection.

Hmm,

Interresting inputs. I have to say, I've never had any grounding issues. I also don't buy into heat from friction having any effect.

Anthing I have ever had with lube on it and a trailer ball has up anywhere but the ball.

On a side note, when I changed tool boxes in the new truck I counted 6 drop hitches in my possesion. Do you think I am subconsciously worried about wearing them out?

All plugs from the 4 flat to the 7 round have a ground wire. I've seen a lot of trailers that don't have it connected and let it ground through the ball- typically on trailers like flatbeds, etc. with a 4 flat plug. But it is supposed to be grounded through the plug connection.

I have always greased my hitch and heard it is a good idea. But I also heard you need to keep you ball clean. Lets say you grease your ball and unhook your trailer at a beach type campground. If you don't wipe down your ball and re grease it will probably be loaded with sand when you re-hook the trailer. Keep sand off your ball.

I have been towing trailers for over 40 years and I put grease on what ever hitch I'm using at the time. Depending on the trailer I am pulling I have used 1/34 in. ball 2 in ball and 2 5/16 ball (Utility, boat, car, and travel trailers) . I would never ground through the ball. When I'm done towing I put the hitch away (I thought there is a law about leaving your hitch on the vehicle because of people getting hurt from walking into them). This way you do not have to worry about getting it dirty. You should wipe the grease of when done.

If you run into the ball on my truck you're too close to it and need to back off.

I would say that; the intended or preferred path to ground is the electrical connection, but those electrons will also use the path of least resistance and any other path they find including your body.

I have used a lot of different hitches over the years, because we formerly rented trailers. I know the Curt hitch manuals I have used say to lubricate the ball with a light coat of grease. At least, some Reese (Coquent Performance Products) hitches said to lubricate the ball but it was a small amount like a couple drops. I don't recall seeing anything about it in the Reese Dual cam, the Equal-I-zer or the E2 manuals but Reese and Progress MFG definitely both sell lube for the ball.

NEVER ever lubricate an Andersen hitch ball. That would remove your friction designed for anti-sway.

In any case, I wouldn't recommend guessing or asking the generic question on here without your actual product info.
I agree, what the are MFG instructions. I own a Anderson Ultimate 5th Wheel Connection. In the owners manual it reads: "never grease ball or coupler"
