Hard-folding tonneau cover

[need to start a new thread because the old one is too old...]

I previously had (stiil have, looking to sell) a Leer 100XL cap on the TV in my sig. Worked great with my previous TT but not so much with the FW. I have a block-and-tackle arrangement in my garage to lift it on and off but that's too much hassle now so I'm looking to change to a hard-folding tonneau cover.

I've narrowed the choice to the BakFlip FibreMax or the Undercover Flex. The Undercover is about CDN$114 less expensive.

Any reasons I should not go with the Undercover Flex (I'm not adventurous enough to go with OC's modified 1-piece... I've McGuivered enough stuff for one lifetime).

Aw, go for the one pc Undercover and mod it. Heck I been McGuivering things my whole life and did this one @ 72 yo.

I was under the impression that everything you buy has to be McGuivered.

I installed this a year ago and do not regret it, on and off in seconds no tools needed.

I went with the BAK RollX, & really like it. It rolls up next to the cab, & gives enough clearance for the FW when turning sharp (at least with my slider hitch).

We went with Ex-Tang. Had one on the F150...it went with it when we traded. Ordered a new one for the F-250...first one came in with two tiny dents on the underside and one of the snap latches broken (easy replacement) and DH called 'em. No pics required and they shipped us a new one. Old one stayed here for six weeks, finally FedEx picked it up.

Oh, and no interference with our Revolution pin box when folded up to 1/3 and latched in place with the straps and snap locks.

We like that it locks down making the bed secure when not towing and you lock the tailgait.

You will want to call and check the fold-over companies dimensions. When I checked them all at last notice (about 6 months ago), the shortbed versions (6.5' ish) would not allow a fifth wheel to hookup and leave the cover in place, even with the first two sections folded over. The section closest to the cab is too long and will interfere with the pin engaging the fifth wheel. Long beds, no biggie, but no go on the short beds. There was one company that would have worked (4 section cover), but they specifically say to not go down the highway with the cover folded in any position.

Edit: I should have stated I want to see out the back window, so the BAK versions are a no go...

Of course if you intent is to remove the cover when you are towing, then disregard my concern.

It seems if you have a fifth wheel, you are left with roll back covers of one variety or another. I had a Roll-X on the F150 and it was great. But, you can not see the pin when you are hitching due to the bulk when rolled up. Thus I would always take it off. The others all roll up in the bed, something I did not want to deal with. Therefore, with the new truck I have not put on a cover at all. I am still trying to figure out what I am going to do, or if I need to do anything at all.

Edit 2: When I last did my checking, I was using my F150 to haul the fiver. Going to the Superduty with the bed that is 5 inches longer, and you go from interference to no interference, at least with the Extang Solid Fold or the Undercover Flex. I am thinking a solid fold is on my wish list!

I had to add the 3 inch lift kit for my PullRite Superglide to have enough clearance to use mine. Works great now on my 2008 GMC shortbed.

Will get some pictures hooked up this weekend.

I carried my cover inside the trailer once when I couldn't keep it on the truck.

I have the BAK G2 and this is the second TV I have it on. My previous TV was a short bed Chevy and there were no clearance issues with it when the 5er was hooked up. If I had to guess, on my next TV I will also have a BAK product on it as well as I have had no issues with them and love how easy they are to fold.

Hasn't in over 15,000 miles, of course the pin box doesn't turn, it just tilts front to back and side to side. The trailer rotates on a pin 22" back from the hitch pin. It is a Reese Revolution Hitch.

Thanks, now I know. I had always assumed they all rotated at the pin.

I have the Bak Flip G2 and will attempt to highlight the good and bad

The good:
*Use of almost the entire bed without removing the cover. It folds up against the rear glass
*It sits nearly flush with the bed rail.
*With the use of a tailgate lock, its fairly secure

The bad:
*mine looks like a golf ball from a small hail storm
* it dents very very easy
* its heavy
* it leaks.
* The hardware has started to rust

I don't think I would buy another. With that said I don't know what else is out there that is comparable.

I have the Ex-Tang Full tilt, roll up cover. Can take the whole thing off if I have too. With the 5W I just roll it up and put the bars in the trailer garage. Takes minutes and I have no issues with clearence. Does not leak and very light.
