Help in IL what plate B or D truck
I just ordered our new 2014 Ram longhorn mega cab with 6.4 box. And 6.7 L with Aisin 6 speed trans with 4.10 gear DWR. I've had a 1ton DWR since 98 always used a B truck plate. And pull 5th wheel camper The Salesman at the Dodge dealer said We need to go with a D plate as the truck is over 8,001 LBS not sure how to go with this. But would welcome any input from IL or surrounding states th at are familiar with the laws here.

Check on the Illinois DOT website. Having lived in IL for too many years, you know they want all the money they can get so they can bury it in shoe boxes.

Both are good thoughts. I Think there's a sticker on the door that tells the weight or they do have portable scales. But with more looking into it you think I will just go with the D plates. Thanks again.

Here in Missouri, vehicles registered with a GVWR over 8500 pounds are exempt from emissions testing. I have to remind the clerk in the license office of this exemption every time I renew my plate and they feel obligated to confirm that every time too.
This applies to all gas-powered trucks 1996 or newer and diesel trucks 1997 or newer.

This is my first post so here we go... If you are eligible for some kind of special plate in Illinois try to get it, I have vet plates on my f250 so it doesn't matter how much it weighs. Also if you get stuck with D plate remember in Illinois you have to get it inspected twice a year. If you get caught with a D plate with no sticker I believe it is a health fine.

I have B class on my F350 transferred from my last F350. Neither weighed more than 8000 lbs but who (police) would actually know that unless I got hauled off to the scales? Not using it for commercial business so that's not going to happen. You'll probably end up with a D plate if you let the dealer sell the plate to you. If I remember right, the question asked of me was "does it weigh more than 8000lbs" and I said "no". Once you get the D plate you can not go back...you can upgrade but never downgrade a registration.

Law is any truck with gvwr of more than 8000 must have D plates and be safety inspected every 6 months. Note: GCVW not scale weight! A good dealer will not allow u to run a B plate. If u were to gst in an accident and be improperly plated and not safety inspected u can be charges with very serious charges.
I realize u have been improperly plated for years, but the judge wont care should something bad happen.

B-Truck License Plates
"B-truck license plates are issued to Second Division vehicles weighing 8,000 pounds or less".
I barely qualify and the DMV sends me a new sticker every year.
Now, using your description of the law I wouldn't even make the class D plate while pulling since Class D is only good to 12000lbs and I don't believe your trailer only weighs 4000 lbs either.

We had this debate at work many times to inconclusive ending.
we called the dmv , Secretary of state office and the state police.
I dont think the state knows its own law
The dmv will for sure want to sell you a "D" plate. Now that said as long as your truck does not weigh over 8000 lbs. at any time you should be fine. Im kinda in the same boat here with my 2500HD.
If you are over 8000 lbs no other plate can be on the truck but a D plate or higher.
No blackhawks, cubs, bears, bulls, white suxs or B and so on.
Ill. does have portable scales and they been know to use them at times.
From my understanding playing dumb after the fact dont work. The fines are lofty.
Il. is a money hungry broke state.

Been across hundreds of portable scales over the last 25 years. Never once have I seen a personal pickup truck get weighed. They're for commercial
trucks and farm. Never seen any pickup get chased down for not stopping either but feel free to pull in and get weighed if you like....they won't object!

Looked like a commercial snow removal service, I'm sure.

This is correct. It is based off GVWR, not on unloaded weight. Most 250/2500 trucks should actually be running D plates, however most run B plates. Once you have a D plate you will also need a twice a year safety inspection. Pretty simple: signals, lights, horns, hazards, wipers, etc. They also check for triangles or flares and fire extinguisher. I think my last one was about $20.00 (doesn't matter if you are commercial or not either.)
