Help with an Equalizer 10k hitch

I have a 2017 Flagstaff 27RLWS TT which weighs aproximately 6600 pds and im pulling it with a 2016 Ford Expedition. The hitch was set up at the dealer and while it seemed to be ok at first i believe i need an adjustment now that the TT has contents. The front of my truck seems to teeter totter more frequently. When reading the manual and i also called Equalizer customer service it appears that i have to add more washers to the hitch head. Right now i have 4 (which based on the instructions is the minimum) and i'm going to try 6 and see what happens. If anyone has any additional comments i'd appreciate them. I'm traveling to Lake George (upstate NY) from Long Island next week and don't want to encounter any issues.

Start with 6 washers and go from there . I started @ 5 and now I`m @ 7 washers and L brackets as high as they will go. My tongue weight is around 1350 to 1500 depending on whats in the garage of the TH . Take your tools along with you as you may get into your trip and decide you want more or less weight transfer and you can change it . A short test run doesn`t give you a good feel for what it will do out on the highway for longer period of time.

Read the manual particular attention should be measuring the front fender wheel well height statically without the trailer hooked up and adjusting to get very close to the same measurement after hooking up. This places the best weight transfer other then going to a cat scale.

By "teeter-totter", do it feel like the hitch point is moving up and down, from a "V" to an inverted "V" causing the front passengers to bounce in their seats a bit? I call that "porpoising", and it can be sickening.


I believe this is caused by the actual TW of the trailer being too close (or over) the TW rating of the WDH. More specifically, the spring bars are not stiff enough to keep the 2 vehicles "in plane". They need to be flexible enough to not jar your teeth when you go thru a pot-hole, but stiff enough that they resist this type of motion.


What is your loaded weight and loaded TW, and what is the rating of your WDH?
I recommend being at least 100 lbs under your WDH rating.
