Hitch adjustment

When I bought my trailer a husky round bar load leveling hitch was included. When it was set up my truck and the trailer were empty. It was hooked on the third link down. A trip to the beach I was loaded heavy and it sagged some. In this case would I grab another link? I e-mailed husky and their answer was to read the setup instructions and maybe readjust the head. In the instructions it said I had to have 5 links free at least. So this last trip to the beach I hooked on the 4th link down which left me 6 links free. It took less air in my airbags to level my truck and it towed fine, It did creak a little and sounded tight. Is this the proper operation of the hitch to grab another link when the load is heavy?I talked to a lot of campers in the campground and no one knew.They just clipped in where camping world set it up. I grab another link when the load is heavier(in both or either the TV or TT)works good.

Some creaking is normal. I've seen quite a few rigs with WD hitches improperly set up (probably from the dealership). The best thing to do is, like they said, read the instruction and take all the measurements. It takes a little trial and error the first time. If you find that one link is not enough and the next link is too much, tilt the head forward one notch (mine, and there are different styles, moves about half a link for each position of head adjustment) and put it back on the link that was too much and try again. Or...go the other way and tilt the head back and use the link that wasn't enough. Make sure the bars are parallel to the frame or pointed slightly down when loaded or they're not doing you any good leverage wise.

Thank you guys,You both gave me the info I was seeking.Being able to grab a link when you put some extra weight on is how I think the hitch should work. Raspivey , I did check the position of the bars after grabbing a link and they still were pointing slightly down so i feel good about that. I'll pay more attention to the creaking and if I feel its becoming a problem I'll try moving the head down a notch. Mike
