I tow a 31 foot 9000 lb GVWR trailer with a Tundra 5.7 liter. When it was new, I got 18 mpg solo and 8 mpg towing. Now that it has 85,000 miles on it I get 17 solo and 7 towing.

17-19mpg w/o trailer.
8-9mpg highway with trailer.
Sounds like about half to me!

Has anyone ever tried an air deflector to improve mileage while towing? There are several out there. Found this one with a quick search: Amazon.com: ICON AeroShield Wind Deflector WD500, Black: Automotive

The manufacturer claims 3+ mpg increase...I've seen reviews that claim 1-2mpg increase. I'm sure there are a lot of factors (type of vehicle, trailer, etc...). Just wondering if anyone has any experience with them or input. Granted, it would take quite a while to recoup the cost with only 1-3mpg increase.

Thanks!

I think we beat this topic to death. I'll move this last one to a new thread.

Without Rocky on the back, my Tundra gets around 17 mpg. With Rocky it gets between 10-12, depending on how many mountain passes I have to go over.
This past trip was almost all interstate (I-25) with zero mountain passes and I got 12.6 mpg...the most ever towing Rocky! (The altitude at my house is 7,000 and the destination was at 4,900.)

My '15 F-250 crew cab diesel 4x4 get around 11 mpg while towing my WnP 30WLA (prob 9500-10k lbs) on the highway @ 60-65. I haven't had it on the highway without the trailer yet for a baseline mpg.

Poor gas mileage and a reasonable camp site fee is still better than a $150-$200 a night hotel room. Not to mention sleeping in your own bed and meeting new friends. "Bite the Bullet" and just enjoy camping.

we pull our rockwood 2304 with a 2014 jeep grand cherokee summit diesel. our unloaded mileage is usually less than 8l/100k which translates to better than 35 mpg imperial or 31 mpg us, this goes down to less than 13l /100k or better than 21.68 mpg imperial or 19 mpg us. this is our second jeep diesel pulling the same trailer in the same area at above legal speeds and both returned similar gas mileage. we use the jeep as our daily vehicle and would not hesitate to buy 3rd jeep diesel and would not even consider a 5.7 gas screemer

completely agree!! I just pulled our 27dbud from Columbus, OH to Myrtle Beach. The mountains in West Virginia didn't hurt as bad as I thought, but my overall average was still only about 7.5 mpg. We stayed 7 nights at Ocean Lakes Campground and had about $1000 total in fuel and site fees. I'll pay that to stay in my own camper any day!!

Towing a 17 foot clipper that weighed 3000pds with a 2011 5.7 Hemi I got between 8 and 9. Towing the exact same route with a 29ft cross roads that weighed 6000pds I got between 8 and 9. Same driving patterns....

He replied a couple of pages back, he's towing with a VW TDI Toureg, which I can believe. Those things are beasts.

For me,

1998 Ram 1500 2wd, 5.9 gas, 6500lb travel trailer with the rippled aluminum siding. I got 14mpg empty and 7mpg towing, at best. Dead on the rule of thumb, 1/2.

2001 Ram 2500 4wd, 5.9 HO diesel, same TT, I got 18-20mpg empty and 10.5mpg towing like a clock. Slightly better than 1/2.

Same truck, now the big fifth wheel, 10 feet longer and 5,000lbs heavier but with the bullet nose and fiberglass sides, thus far I'm pulling down 11.5mpg. Aerodynamics is very, very important. Only about a 42.5% drop.

I put a Banks kit on, and while I haven't done a mileage run yet monitoring the gauge it's improved it greatly.

2015 XLR 24HFS (typically with 2 cruisers) being towed by a 2013 VW Touareg TDI. I actually saw my worst MPG numbers yet a few weekends ago... dropped down to 13 avg MPG. I was camping in the "mountains" so it was a lot of back roads, constant stopping / slowing, and seemingly relentless hills. The VW had no trouble towing.. just didn't get my usual MPG's.
