How fast is too fast

Last night coming home we seen a guy towing a 40' landmark 5'er, with a ram 3500 DRW, he was weaving in and out and we got next to my speedometer was reading 75-80 and I still couldn't pass him.

So how fast is too fast when towing? I do around 60 or so while towing. (I wasn't towing)

It sound like he's an accident just waiting for a place to happen. The fastest I'll go is about 64 mph, and that's on extremely good roads.

I would say 75 as a top end. Many would say 70, I suspect. I don't tow my camper more than a few miles but 65 would likely be my speed on the interstate. I'm comfortable at 70-75 with my boat, but usually 65-70 for it as well. My 8.1 is just too darn thirsty!

I think that the trailer tires are only rated for 65 mph; somebody correct me if I'm wrong. 63 is about it for me when towing.

The max speed of st tires (65) is one factor the second is braking distance. The difference between 60 and 80 is almost double and add to that trailer brakes aren't the best, I could see them over heating from a 80 mph panic stop.

The first thing I would have done is call the state police, the guy was/is a maniac and should have been stopped.

65mph is max speed rating on ST tires. We tow our 42' 5er at 60 to 65 mph if speed limit allows for it. But we go 60 mostly.
He's just plumb crazy towing 80 mph one day you come across him in a ditch with all his rig messed up. He's also endangering everyone on the road. I tow with a Ram 3500 DRW weighing 9000# and my 42' 5er weighing 17500# loaded so that's 26,500#s and at that kind of weigh would plow right the anything on the road except an 18 wheeler.

I am routinely passed early and late in the season by brand new trailers being delivered at 80 plus mph. Not only are the tires not rated for it, the trailers are not rated for it, the bouncing around is not good on them.

I tow the interstate 65-70 hanging out with the semi's most of the time. In Arizona and other states the speed limits are up to 80mph and without the RV I do 80-85 along with the rest of the traffic. But when I'm going thru the mountains, it's 60mph and under with my trailer-haul mode and exhaust brake enabled. Common sense is not to heat up the brakes. Just got back from a 5,000 mile trip out west and this worked for me.

After the blowout last year I don't go above 65 usually cruise at 63, it's a little nerve wracking constantly keeping an eye on the tires

My state recently raised the interstate limit to 70 mph, most traffic now drives 75-79 mph. Some 80+ mph. The RV going down a crowded interstate way below the limit creates a dangerous situation. You see plenty of crazy driving as the average speed cars and trucks drive around the moving road block. Places where the interstate is three lanes wide, you see a very slow RV in the right lane driving next to another slow RV in the middle lane. This leaves only the left lane for normal speed traffic.

Like most motorcycles, not sure why more of the huge, slow RVs don’t take secondary roads where the RV is driving closer to the speed limit and the speed of the normal traffic.

My state is also the home to all Left Lane Larrys (drivers that only drive in the left lane forcing everyone to pass in the right lane) and Jr. Jeff Gordon racers (cruise control challenged drivers that speed up as you attempt to pass and slow back down once you slide in behind them).

When you mix in a Left Lane Larry or Jr. Jeff Gordon racer around a slow moving RV, it can take miles and miles and miles to get past these drivers.

I would not want to be around him. ST tries are speed rated to 65MPH and most LT tires are speed rated to 75MPH (check tire charts). P rated tires are speed rated much higher than LT tires

I guess the guy that passed me Friday with his tt going in excess of 75 mph didn't get this memo. [emoji12]

Most people never read the rules for towing in their states. If you are pulling any trailer in Michigan you are supposed to obey the laws that apply to a semi. If you have a TT over 24 feet, lets say a 34 foot TT then according to the laws in Michigan you aren't supposed to tow over 55 MPH on the highway. Mine is a 30 foot TT and I never exceed 62 MPH. I'm still breaking the law in reality. The cops if they are sharp or bored can pull over any one of us for exceeding the speed limit posted for trucks when we are pulling a trailer or towing a 5th wheel. The tires on these trailers weren't meant for NASCAR racing and any idiot doing over 70 pulling or towing is the person you want to back off from. They are the same idiots that come into a camp ground at midnight slamming doors and making noise. I was always taught to be respectful of others but that seems to be a thing of the past today. Most of us old folks are pretty cool about it all but I have run into a few clowns in my 50 plus years of camping.
