It requires 600 Xs the amount of energy to STOP a vehicle as it does to start it.
60 - 65 is a good speed to "Arrive Alive", all things being equal. If you need to be there sooner, leave earlier.

A few Christmas's ago we were heading west out of Fort Worth when some guy in an Expedition towing a 30ish foot trailer came by us doing over 80. The trailer looked like you were playing crack the whip, it was dancing all over the road. I said to my wife that we we going to see that on the side of the road in a little while.
About 45 minutes later we crested a hill and off in the distance was this white blob on the side of the road, as we got closer we could tell who it was. The trailer was laying on its side and the back of the Expedition on top of it with the front bumper plowed into the ground.
Everybody was ok the guy was throwing trailer parts at the trailer. My wife wouldn't let me stop because she knew I'd say something prophetic to the moron.

On nice flat highway, I'll tow at 70-72 at a max on a 70-75 mph posted highway. Rolling 60-65 down here and the semi trucks will blow by you which can he unsafe as well, especially in a TT. Kinda like a moving road block. I also replaced my ST china bombs with commercial grade E load LT tires. I have seen people towing 80+ and that is a little crazy...

LOL. China bombs can blow out at any speed. Hence the name. I have a racing buddy that tows 60-65 ALWAYS and takes fanatical care of his equipment and he still dealt with china bombs.... To the point that he was replacing them with fresh ST tires every 2 years to try and reduce potential blowouts. He finally came to the LT side and hasn't had one since. I've known him since 1995. I had one ST blow on me with my 1st racing trailer and I switched to LTs and havent had one since, as well.
The ST/LT discussion is like the gas/diesel discussion

25 to Life does not fix stupid! It just changes who they are stupid around someone else and cost taxpayers $35,000 or more per year to keep them there. I spent 33 years working around them before I retired.

I keep under the speed limit. But most of the time 65 to 70 and set the cruise kick back and relax. The wind normally sets the speed . The harder it blows the slower I go. They put wind farms around here. I got two little twin girls and we get were going when we get there. No need to hurry to fast.
I been passed by people I know they were running 85 or so

What about 18 wheelers?
I see 18 wheelers driving down the road at 80 mph. What is the difference? Most trailer tires are rated for 65. Shame on anyone who would purchase one. As long as we settle for crap, that is what we'll get. They do make trailer tires that are rated for highway speeds.
We used to run retreads too, but no one buys those anymore because they throw their treads at 65, just like the trailer tires that come on our trailers. My trailer weighs 1/2 of what my truck weighs, and has drum brakes. Why shouldn't it stop as well as my truck?

Good chance if some guy pulling a travel trailer at 80 mph he does not own it. He probably moving it from the factory to the dealer. Another good reason to buy your RV's in or near the town their built in.

I hate driving 91 in Hartford normally, nevermind when we are towing, especially right where the 84 interchange is. A coworker who has a 5er was talking about how crazy it is to try and merge and switch lanes at that spot going onto 84w. People around here are crazy. Lol

so mnoland have you never seen pieces of 18 wheeler tires on the road. Why do you think that happens. Even some 18 wheeler trailer tires are not rated to 80. The Michelin tires I looked at were rated from 55 to 75 MPH.

Yes Sir fits my Motto (50 on the road is better than 80 in the Ditch!) Also just because the Posted Speed Sign says ??? MPH if the (Road Conditions /Rain/Ice/Wind/Fog) are there the Cops (Can/Will) write a ticket for (Speed Excessive for Road Conditions)! Youroo!!
