Husky WDH Questions

After reading some threads on here regarding WDH's, I realized I installed mine wrong when I purchased a new TV.

So, I found the installation instructions, that I never received from my Dealer, online. I followed the directions, but have a couple of questions/concerns...

1. The instructions say to make sure the ball is slightly tilted back or upright, but not forward. It was until I placed the spring bars on and tightened them. Now it appears to be tilted slightly forward. Se pic below (if I can figure out how to show them!)

2. Are the spring bars supposed to be parallel with the tongue/frame of the trailer. Mine are certainly not!

3. The directions say there should be at least 5 chain links between the lift bracket and the spring bar and to adjust the head tilt to accomplish this... My lift bracket is on the fifth full chain link to get the TV to settle correctly. Do I need to adjust the head tilt? See question #1 too.

I presume that the Husky WDH is similar to other brands where the angle of the head unit is determined by the number of spacers (washers) on the top of the head combined with the setting of the bolt beneath it. It would appear that you need to add some washers to the top in order to tilt the head unit backward. You want to end up with spring bars parallel to the frame after tensioning. You also want to have at least 5 links under tension. If it takes 7 washers so be it.

This may not be relevent as my WDH was a Wolf. I found out that the opposite was true. Tilting the ball toward the trailer increases the load on the trailer tongue and reduces the load on the hitch, raising the tow vehicles' back end. The instructions also said to make the bars as parallel to the trailer tongue as possible

Interesting information. If you want to be good and sure, do what I did. I took my trailer to a scale and did a series of weighings axle-by-axle for the TV alone and for the TV/Trailer combo with various settings of tension. In this way I could determine exactly what the weights were and how I was distributing things axle to axle. I haven't had a chance to do that with my new trailer though since I have only had it a few weeks. I do plan on doing it soon. Engineers love data.

Husky WDH

My directions say:

"If the front has settled much more than the rear, increase the number of chain links between the lift bracket and the spring bar."

It goes on to say:

"To allow movement when turning, there should be at least 5 links betweenthe lift bracket and the spring bar. ... Adjust head tilt to accomplish correct chain length."

So, I definately need to add 1 link between the lift and the spring bar. If I read correctly that will make the front NOT settle as much... I need the front to settle...ugh.

Do I need to move the "Head Assembly" up or down on the "Shank Assembly"? I would think down so the rear would not settle as much... Anyone have any ideas.

I thought we had it figured out and added some washers to the Head Assembly, but now I'm not sure... We are leaving as soon as I get off from the firehouse in the morning... I guess it is already MUCH better than what I got from the Dealer.

Thanks,
