A turbo diesel is just getting broken in at 100K and will go close to million miles if well maintained. Truck mfg have had a long time to perfect their models. Especially their drive trains. Most of the larger truck automatic transmissions will do 500K, like the Allison and Aisin transmissions. So, for the casual driver who goes on vacation or does not pull anything most of the year, the newer trucks will last a lot longer than your pedestrian family car.

There is not a bunch of changes over the years like passenger cars. No arms race to have the latest technology packed into them. Its the electronics that give new vehicles nightmares.

And yes, you can buy a 2012 Ram 4500 like mine for under US$20K with less than 250K miles. You can get a 3500 or 2500 with basically the same motor for even less. I have probably driven more miles in the last 25 years than most of those who have posted in this thread put together.

I did buy new but that is because I wanted to. And yes, I have 250K miles in three years. My job takes me all over the country and I enjoy being comfortable. I cut my teeth on Chevys but over the years, I have gravitated toward the Rams for their overall reliability.

I do not have to impress anyone. I do not have to explain myself. Take my years of experience and the millions of miles I have driven in diesel for what its worth.

But to call a 2012 Ram old, cheap and unreliable is just ignorant.

I guess this from 2012 is ignorance and the last one is for 2015.

Matches up pretty good with what we see in the shop.

I guess most people dont know that all those otr trucks might have 1million + miles, but usually have in frames done somewhere between 450k and 750k, with complete rebuild a little after or before that 1 million mark. They also have had several clutches, trannys gone thru and most every other part replaced or worked on along the way.
So maybe 100k is not much for the block on a light duty, but everything else is probably already 30-70% thru its life span.

(Im sorry, i held back as long as i could.)

For me I do appreciate all the advice but I am deciding on a GMC 2500HD or Ford F-350 either 2015-2016 both Super Crew Short Box Configurations. I am going to buy new this one time and like my usual maintain it very well, so that being said anything I buy will last I am looking for the Cheaper models not spending 60-70+ K.....I will not look back and I will buy as I want, I looked at all three and the most fitting solutions for me are the two I mentioned. The F250 has 700lbs less payload and 600lbs less towing capacity for the same $ as an F350 so to me not worth it.

Good luck and Safe Trails to all you fellow campers, be safe and Happy Camping 🤗

I think you find that on the yellow door sticker on 3/4 ton diesel will be less than 2500 lbs payload and fully loaded with options in will be closer to 2250 lbs payload. With a 1 ton diesel you see payloads around 3750 and maybe a fully loaded one at 3300lbs. That is a big difference when comes to 5er you can haul and stay within the truck specs.

If was going to order one or get one from another dealer I would put in the buy order that if the yellow sticker wasn't at certain number I could refuse and get back my deposit.

My 2013 Chevy 2500HD Diesel had 2475Lbs
My 2015 Ford 1 Ton Diesel has 3744 lbs.

Anyone have examples of payload on 3/4 diesel or 1 ton diesel payload numbers?

Interesting F350 fuel mileage data

Wait I am confused how do the MFG's advertise that the F350 and other HD trucks have payloads around 3800 when your telling me it is much less? I see all sorts of 5th wheels bigger then one I am getting towed by F350 3/4 ton trucks. I am not buying a Dually just to tow a light 5th wheel that is nuts.

Am I to understand the Crusader I want which has a pin weight of 2000 lbs and dry weight of 10,000lbs may not be able to be towed correctly by an F350 with a max tow of 15,700 and payload of 3800?

The chart I showed is for a 2500 RAM SRW. A 3500 would have DRW and a higher payload.

I'm sure you know this, but a 3500 can be srw.

The internet is a wonderful source of information. For every review you post about how unreliable a RAM/ Cummins is, it can be matched with one showing how unreliable your brand is, whatever it may be. Doesn't matter.

Not trying to get your panties in a bunch (to use your words) but I hope you ain't wearing thongs before you read this. Here's an example,

5 Least Reliable Cars and Trucks You Can Buy | Motor Guides

I personally think they are all about equal, it's just a matter of how you take care of it.

You will find that if you build one on the web the delivered weights are gonna be different, I posted my door sticker it was 3418 pounds payload, cwswine said his was I believe 3744 when he wanted 3750 if I remember correctly. Not sure if there is some confusion from your first paragraph but you said f350 3/4 ton, there is no such thing.

Ok enlighten me with the true definition and specs on 1/2, 3/4, and 1-Ton? I would say based on numbers most people towing 5th wheels are way over payload then? I see a ton of ppl towing big 5th wheels with F350's SRW and same with Dodge and GM's.

I see only a few ppl with Dually's towing 5th wheels most are F350's with SRW and next most popular is Dodge then I would say GM.

No way I would buy anything bigger to tow and use as a daily driver? I guess I will tow my Roo with the new diesel truck I will buy...lol

I see a ton of people towing big fifth wheels with f350s also, see close to the same doing it with f250s just the same. Are they over on payload?? I'll probably never know, but I'm not weight police either, I ran 3,000 pounds over legal limit of 80,000 pounds the other night in my semi, so I'm not the one to harp on it. I tow at 43 foot 14,000 pound fifth wheel with my f350, within all ratings and specs, my wife has been daily driving it for 1.5 years, it's our only vehicle, she loves it. I know I rambled there, not sure if I helped

I would agree, from a GVWR. I guess the way they get away with it is the GAWR even on my 2500 I could haul an additional 3500 over the rear axle.

Does Chevy have a payload on the door or do you have to substract the GVRW from the base weight to come up with a payload? RAM makes you do the calculation. (unless I missed it)
