Is it worth to trade in?
Howdy all! Currently I have a 2010 F-150, 5.4 with a 3.73 (11,200 GVWR, 17,100 GCWR). 109,000 miles. Towing our 9,000lb pull behind camper.
The dealership just posted a 2008 F-250 6.4 Diesel with 3.73 (12,500 GVWR, 23,000 GCWR) 133,000 miles, no DEF. Waiting on final price and inspection but guessing 25k is will be their asking.
We would like to start traveling a little further from home on trips with it. Does this seem like a good fit or problematic?
It also has a mod (maybe). But not sure what it is and if it tells me good or bad news about the condition of the engine. I have attached a photo.
Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

Hello,
Find another truck, you have no idea how that tuner was used and how much stress was placed on the engine.

The 6.4 came with it’s own set of problems also.

The 6.4 is one of the better diesels used by Ford. The tuner in your picture just shows that it has been tuned and probably deleted. Find out if it has a full delete (egr, etc). If so, even better, as most 6.4 problems were related to emissions. Unfortunately, most major repairs require the cab to be removed on these models.
If it is in good shape, 25k is not a bad price depending on option package. Older diesels under 150k are in demand these days.
I would sell my current truck myself if possible.
You will be amazed at the improvement in towing experience

I just traded in a 2012 Ram 2500 CTD CC LB 4x4. $28500. 59,??? miles. One owner. Retail was slightly higher. I can't see $25K for a truck with 133,000 miles and a known history of problems as being a good buy.

Personally I would avoid a 6.4 ford.
1. cracked pistons - casting flaws/too thin in spots
2. clogged oil coolers
3. cracked up pipes.
4. fuel diluting oil.
*disclaimer. I am still hurting from a 6.0L ford I owned once.

I almost bough an 05 6.0 F350 Lariat with 41,000 on it back in 2010. Old guy owned it and traded in every few years cause he could. I wanted the Ford extended warranty. So I needed to get an inspection.
Leaking bed plate
Glow plug bad
Crank sensor bad.
Not covered under the warranty because they occurred before the warranty.
I had the OASIS report done but all that shows is what was done if it was brought in.
Needless to say I ran from it. Sad because it was a really nice truck in otherwise perfect shape.

You can find a gotcha list for every diesel out there. The 6.4 is no exception. But the 6.4 is still a favorite to be bullet proofed, especially by a full delete which removes most of the major problems. Here is a fair write-up which includes items for a perspective buyer to look for.

Personally, I would stay away from Ford all together and look for a Duramax

First off. I've never owned a 6.4. I just know from my shopping last year.
I was told to avoid them and instead go with a 6.0 (later years of '05 -'07) seem to be less problematic after a few issues are resolved.
If you were to find a bulletproofed 6.0 with low miles, it'll likely be in a similar price range due to high demand.
If you can't find one that's been bulletproofed you can usually buy them right and afford to have them bulletproofed under that as well.
The newer 6.7's are nice but the first few years were problematic too.

Buying a 6.0 or 6.4 is like buying a fixer upper house IMO.

Like everything, it comes down to price. Our 04 6.0 was perfect until 83000k. Then EGR trouble that cost us $1780. At 115,000 started heating under load. Ford offered real net trade in @ $6000-7000, versus cash price of a new 6.7 @ $59,000 plus tax etc. Real market price, private party looked like max $10,000. So keep and full BULLETPROOF it for $10000 vs upgrade for about net $55,000 to an at that point too new to judge engine. Hummmmm. With full bullet proof system done some diesel shops say the engine could be solid for 200,000 more miles. Easy decision for us. We will never put 200,000 miLes on it so money saved. Does everything we need it to do, and no HO U SE PAYMENT size month pmt to FMC.

It’s a lariat package, seems to be in good condition. I know nothing about diesels, but will/want to learn. From a photo I took it looks like the EGR has already been deleted. Not sure if this is the right truck. Might try and find an independent mechanic to take a look at it first.

The 6.4 and the 6.0 aren't in the same league at all.

Just joined the forum so this is my first post. I owned a 2008 F350 from new with the 6.4. Had many minor but expensive engine problems. Recently started running very badly and then stopped completely. Towed to a shop and found most injectors were shot and the crankcase had self destructed. Sold to a local mechanic for $4k. Was towing a large 2012 Keystone Montana which I really liked but I decided to downsize when I found I could buy a new C class for not much more than a new truck Just traded the fifth wheel for a 2020 Forester 3011DS at an RV show this weekend so I expect I may be on the forum often looking for advice after I get it.

The current 6.7 is a great engine. Would never touch a truck with a tuner or a DEF delete.

Don't do it. I've owned the 6.0, the 6.4 and currently the 6.7. I didn't own the two former motors long enough to see if they would develop problems but the internet is replete with comments about how problematic the 6.4 was. AND this one you are looking at "has a mod (maybe)". that's a big red flag.
Do your research. Caveat emptor.
