The hitch head for my Andersen hitch with a 2 5/16" ball weighs 28.5 pounds. That is the only part that is remotely heavy or that requires any strain to install and set up. These hitches are completely different than any other weight distributing / sway control hitch. I think the sway control aspect is indispensable towing high profile trailers like campers.

There is no need to ever lift the hitch head if you make a device to move it / store it. You could do so with a cheap steel hand truck with a "shelf" or "bracket" welded on it at the correct level to allow the hitch head to slide off of it right into the receiver of your tow vehicle.. You could also use a brake stool, child's wagon, floor jack etc or a completely custom hitch caddy. It mostly depends on how your home is set up. If the hitch is stored in a garage with a paved drive, take your pick. On rougher ground a hand truck with bigger wheels would work easier.

Thanks to all of you for your thoughtful input. Now we have to decide what to do. We dry camp and like to go to very out of the way places to hike, which means we can't do that with our current MH and there aren't rental cars most of the places we go. We did do that in Santa Barbara and it worked out well. Not so much on our latest trip way up on northern California coast. Heading out again soon for a 3 week trip up through Oregon and Washington. That ought to really let us see what we can and can't do. Thanks again for all your input! We will have fun exploring options!

Obviously, we're retreading many of the same "solutions" at this point in the thread. Some will work for you better than others. Let us know how you proceed -- we're interested to find out what solution fit your life and it may help others in the future who have the wherewithal to have read through the thread.

I cannot speak to the pilot. I gave up trying to tow with ours because the requirements from the DW made everything too heavy.

What about one of these? They make them to work in an SUV or minivan as well for the power scooters and you can use an electric winch as well.

You can use it to attach the WDH and remove it as well as lifting other items in and out of the rear of your vehicle.

Not sure if it solves the back problem completely but worth a shot. Best of luck!
