Jeep Wrangler unlimited tow gear?
I have a 2014 Jeep Wrangler 4 door unlimited and am towing a 1600 lb pop up camper. The dealership says I don't need a transmission cooler as I am towing all flat land. My question is I only have drive and a plus and minus sign that I have no idea what that is for. I used to tow in 1 on my Cherokee but the wrangler does not have that so do I just tow in drive? Any help would be appreciated.

The +\- should be a gear selector

Not sure what you mean by towing in 1? Did you tow the entire time in 1st gear 
A lot of modern automatic trans. now have a sport modes allowing a person to sequentially shift their own gears no clutch required. Can be fun an useful to some but useless in the grand scheme of things.
You should be good in just D just be easy and consistent with the throttle to reduce shifts OR you could try the +/- thing. That may reduce you shifts but be mindful to shift down and up manually as needed

Towing in 1
Ok so the Cherokee had drive and then it had 1 and 2. I was told drive was overdrive and 1 and 2 were lower gears and to tow in 1. Keep in mind I am talking about an automatic. Well the wrangler does not have anything but drive and + and -. Whatever they are. So would I tow in drive.

Whoever told you to tow in 1, is an idiot.
How about reading the Towing section of the Jeep's owners manual?

Ok so you are missing the question here. I no longer have the Cherokee and the owners manual for that particular car did say to tow in 1. The wrangler I have now and am going to tow with does not say anything about towing except for weights in its manual. I called the dealership who said they thought you towed in drive and it should be alright without a transmission cooler but what does think and should really mean? They won't commit to an answer. So I figured I would ask other jeep owners what to do. I appreciate your help but the manual does not state much about towing. I do not have the factory tow package. Just had them add a brake controller and hitch to the jeep when I bought it.

You can't go wrong with installing a transmission cooler - it'll help in the long run and fairly cheap to do, as well as being cheap insurance to hopefully keep from overheating the tranny - even in the flatlands.
Use "D" for your gear selection. You should have no problems.

Put it in drive "D" and let the automatic trans do its thing, also adding a tranny cooler will help trans live a long and healthy life.

When you push towards the -
You will see a number on the dash, behind the D.
That's manual shifting.
Since the jeep has no tow mode, if you find it downshifting a lot, push the shifter till you see 4.
That locks it in fourth.

well, i've never heard of any vehicle with the D, 2, 1 selection, that had 1 for towing.
unless it was for a short pull, on a steep grade.

Since you have a fairly light trailer, just put in D and go.
If you find the transmission downshifting a lot (dropping a gear, then going back up a gear, then dropping a gear again... and continuing this process), use the "-" to downshift and hold it in that gear. If the transmission still hunts for a gear, use the "-" to drop another gear.
Letting the engine run at a higher RPM, in a lower gear, is better for everything.
The "+" and "-" on your Jeep allows you to restrict the transmission to which speeds/gears it can use. You're setting the "ceiling". When utilized, the transmission will operate normally, except it won't go into a gear higher than you set with the "+" and/or "-". Try it out anytime, towing or not. You'll figure out what it is doing pretty quick.

I'm a big Jeep guy. My wife had a 2012 Unlimited & I have a 2013 Rubicon.
If your Jeep has a factory tow package it already has a cooler. It's also rated to tow 3500 with the 3:73 diff.

Keep it in D too. Our Hybrid came in at 3200# and we had no issues towing it.

You do know you can monitor your transmission temp in the smart center on the dash, right? Also, the owner's manual tells you in detail how to use the manual shift mode on the transmission. Comes in handy when off-road.
