Jump in or wait? 2016 or 2017 3500 duramax srw

The f150 is going to get rotated out of the car ban for a new 3500 srw 4dr 4x4 duramax. Would you take the tried and true 16 even with the pita def fillup under the hood, or wait for the bigger engined 17?

Seems chevy has a tight lip about the 17..

jump or wait

Talking DEF it"s got be diesel.I wasn't aware that a new GM/Duramax was coming.I guess if it's a proven design ,say from Europe or Asia then go for it. but if it's a new design I would give them a couple years. Don't want to revisit the 2001-2005 new design problems.

Bigger Engine ? About time they stepped up with Ford and Dodge. I was shocked that chevy has the lowest tow ratings according to trailer life magazine.

I would take all the rebates that you can now and give them two years to work out the pita gremlins that pop up on a redesign powerplant

They are only going from 6.6 to 6.7. Take the rabates and jump on it. You won't be disappointed. The Duramax is a hard worker.

The Big Three are microdots apart on most stuff. One has this, the other doesn't. The other has that, the 3rd doesn't. Brand Loyalty is high.........with me too. But I wouldn't trade my 2016 GMC Dually for much of anything. I haven't pulled a 5'er yet, but if it has big issues with it, I'll faint, and go buy a Freightliner.

I can send you to a dealer that will practically give them away............but it's in Arkansas!!

If I was looking to trade my Silverado 3500SRW I would go with a Dodge. I really want to be at a point in life with no truck payments.

If you need the truck now get it now if you can get the deal you want on it, and again i never would get a new motor type from any brand with all the complexity of these newer diesels today

I'd wait.....but only long enough to drive to a ram dealer and buy a cummins. Straight 6 design is the way to go but I suppose you weren't looking for that debate. I would however do as other say, stay with the existing model/designs and don't be the first to buy the newest package. They will take 2 years to get it right.

As for the def comments about being under the hood. Who cares, you only need to fill that every 3-5K (at least my Ram does). I wouldn't care where the filler was located, not an issue. Way too much hoopla about DEF. No bigger deal than adding blinker fluid....Good luck with whatever your choice, I hope you enjoy it!

Too much emphasis is placed on ever increasing diesel engine power. The diesels offered by Dodge, GM, and Ford offer more torque than we know what to do with. I wouldn't wait for a more powerful engine that doesn't have a proven track record.

I waited till near the end of 2010 and then ordered the 250 with the 6.4.

Steel heads, no def.

Would have liked the new six speed transmission and higher MPGs because of it but did not want to revisit alloy heads on steel block head gasket issues again.

I'm pulling 12K 5er with a 2015 Duramax (2500HD) and it is proving to be a very nice combo. Truck's been driven 22,000mi and 5er was in tow for 12,000 of those. Will make one comment on the DEF fill location.

Most of the time I buy the DEF 2.5 gals at Walmart for $7.88. Two bottles will do a fill that lasts about 5,000 miles. I use a step-stool to get up under the hood and though I agree that its inconvenient, its tolerable.

If however, you want to fill your DEF at the truck stop pumps (Flying J, etc.) then you will be subjected to Flying J's idiot pump programming. The pump will not allow you to pump from the DEF hose until after you have pumped from the diesel hose. The hoses are separate and the lengths are limiting. The scenario goes like this. Pull up to the pump and fill your diesel. Then back-up your rig (hope there's room behind you) so that now the DEF hose will reach across your truck front over to the opposite side where the DEF port is. Fill your DEF.

If you put a calc to the savings (Walmart is $3.15 a gallon, Flying J is usually about $2.25 a gallon). I've done both and now find it much simpler to just grab a bottle of DEF at Walmart while we're out traveling the byways.

Does the Wallymart brand come with a funnel like the Blue DEF?

Walmart DEF includes a funnel. BlueDEF is only a $1 or so more if you prefer.

Around here it is 12 to 14 a 2.5 gallon vs walmart's 7.88. Just curious thanks.

I also like my combo with the 2015 2500. I would be leary with getting a whole new power plant that is not field tested yet. I would hate to see it end up with the Ford's 6.0 (I think it was) that had all sorts of issues.. I do not pull a literal house (well maybe I do I guess) but I think I have more than enough power for what I need.

Thanks for the help.

So I upgraded from my 2012 Dmax to a new 2016 Dmax Denali and I don't regret it. If they do indeed come out with something new in 2017, I wouldn't want it anyway. First year problems can be a real pain in the rear. The only thing I don't like about the current truck is the Bosch CP4.2 injection pump as they are still using it and it is the weak link for sure (and expensive when it goes). However, I treat my fuel at every fill up and I never had a problem in my 2012.

I just bought a 2016 Ford F350 dually, just to prevent being the guinea pig for the new 2017 model coming

Hoglou, I work for GM and I never heard anything about a new engine for 2017. Will make some phone calls tomorrow and find out what it's all about.

Same here. Body style change yes . If you want that then wait or get a 2016. Chevy still can out perform most diesels. Later RJD
