Just drove the F150 Ecoboost

Ford brought an Ecoboost F150 to my house to drive this morning. It drives like a big, fast luxury SUV; like an Audi Q7. Very quick, very smooth, very quiet. You can really feel the torque; which will be nice for towing. As nice as the engine is, the transmission is just as impressive. Automatic mode, tow/haul mode, manual mode. You can prevent it from using 6th gear, or 5th and 6th, etc. So, if you are towing your RV, and don't want it to use 6th gear, you can do that. Everything was very intuitive and easy to use. In manual mode, you select the gear you want sequentially up/down. This engine/trans combination is definitely in my future. My guess is that they will be in short supply for awhile and that there won't be as much discounting. These vehicles will sell themselves in a test drive. The difference between the ecoboost/6 speed and my 5.4/4 speed is like night and day. The Ford rep said he is getting 22 to 24 highway on the 4x4 Platinum Crew. But of course, you can run the mileage down to 10 in the city and by running the heck out of it. This is an extremely impressive vehicle. I'm frankly astounded.

You lucky dog. I know that I could request a free test drive, but I don't think I can afford it......I know what would happen.

Thanks for the excellent report !!!

$750 more than the 5.0 V-8.

Well, I won't be in the market for awhile either. Maybe better to let the market settle down a little. I'm on retirement income now.

Demand for this engine will be through the roof once people drive it. I think it will be hard to get one for awhile. Truly unbelievable . . .

In some areas it will be, but according to the local Ford guys they think it will be a hard sell in farm country as bigger is better around here. The 6.2 is going to be the engine of choice around here. When they get one in for demo here I will be getting it for a day, just have to be patient I guess. I think it would be an awesome unit for our needs but I will wait and get a 2yr old lease buyback so I don't get raped again on a new one.

Yes, the 6.2 could be a good choice but the problem is that it only comes with limited model availability; like Harley Davidson, Platinum, etc. I know what you mean though. "Old school" will take some convincing.

I tried to get them to bring me one, but I live 2 hours from the nearest large city, so I'm out of luck.

Good writeup...glad you enjoyed it! Can't wait to drive one when they show up at the dealer, but my next truck will be a 3/4 ton, so no F150 for me next time around.

The ecoboost will be a great daily driver, but I wouldn't use it to do any serious pulling. I am surprised at "The Ford rep said he is getting 22 to 24 highway on the 4x4 Platinum Crew", as my 2010 Dodge does just as well.
But Ford does build great trucks, and it will be a hot seller.

I think the EcoBoost will do just fine towing. It is built with diesel concepts in mind, so I don't see any issues.

The ecoboost v6 has 50 foot-lbs LESS torque than the 5.4 liter v8, so how is it going to pull as hard? Answer; it ain't.

No, the V6 EcoBoost has 55 ft-lbs MORE torque than the 5.4 (420 for the EB, 365 for the 5.4), and has it at a lower RPM with a superior (ie. diesel-like flat) torque curve from 1700 to 5000 RPM.

Seriously, the 5.4 won't hold a candle to the 3.5 EB. It won't be close, and I have a 5.4 that I think tows pretty well.

Don't forget that is 24 us mpg so it will be close to 30 imp mpg which we use. I mean I can get 22mpg with my 2500 megacab 4x4 hemi on the highway in the right conditions. And that Eco boost with the max payload package is rated higher in every way compared to my megacab 2500 and by alot. Also I fall into the niche that the truck was designed for "ocassional towing"

Yes, I realise the Ford rep was talking US mlieage, and so was I, as my Dodge's computer is calibrated for US gallons.
As for the rep talking about 22 to 24, you would know that the 24 number is stretching it. At times, my computer is running at 30 mpg, and it is accurate.

My Dodge does it on cruise at 105 km.hr, with a slight tail wind.
Otherwise, it averages about 22 US, or over 26 Canadian.
