Kayaks?

Anybody carrying tandem kayaks on a bed rack in a 1/2 ton crew cab short bed pick-up truck while towing a TT? If so, what brand rack are you using? Thinking about an Adarac truck rack. Will have to move kayaks a bit forward so that overhang will not interfere with front cap of TT.

with a short bed, you would have half the length of the kayaks over the cab. You need a rack that extends over the cab for kayaks that long. Or get a roof rack then you can center the kayaks on that. I carry 2 10s and a 14.5 footer on a roof rack.

Not sure if anyone would be interested in inflatable kayaks but we just bought two of the Sea Eagle 330 Pro Package which eliminates hauling them on your vehicle. Understanding that we are out just for a relaxing time on the water with no destination so the inflatable fit our needs. We purchased them on Amazon. Enjoy your travels and kayaking adventures.

We tow with 3 bikes on the trailer, 3 kayaks on the rack and a sectional folding tonneau cover on the bed. The stake pocket racks are of our own design and construction (except for the Thule folding J-racks that are bolted to the top).

Here's what I'm using:

Bakflip CS with Rack System

A little expensive but very high quality and the racks are easy on/off and fully adjustable along the length of the bed. The cover is strong enough to stand on plus I have tiedowns that also fit in the grooves where the racks are fastened. I've hauled kayaks and windsurfing equipment on top of racks and strapped under racks plus on top of the cover. Last trip "hung" bikes in the bed of the truck with the cover open by using Velcro straps between bike rims and racks causing the bikes to "stand" in the bed. $.02

I am using Spring Creek One Tuff Rack. They are great expand to fit multiple kayaks and you still can use your bed cover. Little pricey but they are worth it.

Ours is the Bakflip without rack system - we considered your solution - which is very nice - but since we already had the Tonneau cover we decided it was too spendy.

Thanks for the reply. How long are your kayaks? We have two tandems that are 13.5 feet long. I like your setup and that is exactly what I would like. Just want to make sure I don't have any interference with the front cap of the trailer with the overhang of the kayaks. How do you carry the bikes on the back of your trailer? Bumper mounted rack or with a frame mounted receiver?

I am using the Yakima outdoorsman on my short bed and carry my 12 foot kayaks with my roo no problem. I am confident I can handle up to 14 feet without hitting the camper.

I like the outsoorsman as I could use one pair with a roof rack for additional length but I doubt I will need to.

Good question JD! I'm betting they are asking you but, not to keep them in suspense, I carry a 17' Mirage drive Hobie and windsurfing gear between 10-12 feet in length. Bikes, as noted earlier, standing in the back of the truck.

Well, I won't keep PVFD88 in suspense either!

Our kayaks range in length from 10' to 13'. We tow with ProPride 3P hitch, which means that our truck is about a foot farther from the trailer than it would be with a conventional sway control hitch. That extra space, however, is more than taken up by our bikes, which don't ride on the back of the trailer at all...



... so I have to make sure mine is far enough forward. Your kayaks are 6" longer and you have 1' less hitch gap, but I'm assuming no bikes on the front... so I think you'd be okay. I would do a careful sharp turn at a very low speed to be sure they're are far enough forward, then mark them so you know where to put them next time.

*We have changed bikes and sold this trailer since the photo was taken, but you get the idea.

Well I was actually talking to everybody! Thanks for the responses to my questions. I am now more comfortable that I can use a bed rack to carry the kayaks without hitting the TT.

@JD and Beastlet - you carry kayaks on top and the bikes over the tongue and don't have any interference? That is a great setup!
