I'm following this thread because I think we should one day replace our Ram with something more comfortable for a family of 5 plus friends...

We have a lot of things to consider in addition to towing capacity, but thought I would put some numbers and links down:

'16 Chevy Suburban will tow up to 8300#.

Link to Chevy.com

The '16 Nissan Passenger NV 3500, 8700#

Link to Nissan.com

And the '16 Ford Expedition, 9200#

Link to Ford.com

Of course, all have to have max tow package...

With an 11000 lb gvwr it will answer a lot of family towing needs too bad it is only fleet offered. Chevy could make a mint in the towing industry with this.

Don't forget the conversion van market with the Duramax Chevy van with 10k towing capabilities. And that would be an easy pulling 10k, not a maxxed out 9k with a gasser.

We had a diesel Suburban as one of our medic units when I did that in another life... Man that thing was a BEAST.

Was that one of the 6.2 or 6.5's? I don't think they have put a DMax in a Burb, although there are custom shops that do.

I do not know, it was 15 years ago... But it was a diesel monster, we also had a few of the original Broncos and then eventually went to Excursions in diesel. Now they have 2500 chevy D-maxs

EDIT: Looked it up, might have been a GMC suburban not Chevy...
Very similar looking example:

That's what I say now when momma is in the drop off/pick up line at school. I swear that woman is going to go all commando on some unsuspecting mom for getting out of her car while in line one of these days! You see it in movies, my wife lives every day. I love it when she calls me in line and I get to listen to her. I really should make a recording! It's like a bunch of sailors in a traffic jam!

This was one of the many reasons my wife started home schooling, the school officials, heck even the police let them get out of their cars in drop off line and go inside like they are the only ones there, nobody lifted a finger to stop if, and yet she's the crazy one for honking at people. I don't have to wonder if she's the only one anymore, so glad I don't get them angry phone calls anymore

Will check it out later. Came with all towing capabilities and brake controller, but no hitch. Go figure. We don't tow with it anyway.

Are you sure the reciever hitch is not behind the removable cover?

OP: As far as tongue weight, on average, I'd say over 500lbs but probably closer to 750lbs. With the WDH installed it will take away some of the squat by distributing weight to the front axle of the tow vehicle. If an SUV is a must, I'd look at the Yukon XL or Suburban. The only thing I believe that limits my Denali is the really high axle ratio. Like stated above though, 405 h.p. makes it pretty capable.

Yep, crawling under it was the first thing I did.

Thanks everyone! I have short list of possible SUVs now and I feel pretty sure about how to determine Tongue Weight and how it calculates into Payload Capacity. I will let everyone know how it goes. Cheers!

  1. Made sure to buy my second camper first.
  2. Buy camper first and then get the right vehicle.
  3. Researched towing vehicles & respective towing guides cover to cover.
  4. Read the camper owner guide cover to cover.
Now I am trying to figure out the right tow vehicle. I feel a Large SUV can meet our needs. I need some advice before I commit to a vehicle. I have some experience towing trailers with larger equipment on them but never a camper.

Large SUV Ratings Avg (Examples: QX80, Armada, Navigator, Tahoe, Yukon)

Curb Weight = 5600
Payload Capacity = 1700
GVWR = 7300
Towing Capacity = 8500
Class IV Weight Dist. Hitch & Sway Control = 10k Rate & Tongue 1k

2 Adults & 2 Children + Luggage = 500

2015 Salem 26tbud

Dry Weight = 6068
Cargo Weight = 1709
*Tongue Weight = ? (Need to be 10 to 15% of GVWR of Trailer?)
Estimate Cargo/Camper Equipment = 500

Questions:
Can you provide good or bad experience by towing with Large SUVs?

How does a Weight Distribution Hitch affect Tongue Weight? I read a few things but still confused. I need this number to make sure Payload capacity isn't exceeded.

Thanks in advance!

I tow a 2016 wildwood RKSS , 33' long, 6350 dry weight with a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee with Hemi pushing out 360hp and 390lb-ft of torque. Class IV hitch with quadra lift, tow mode and tranny cooler. I have a blue Ox WDH. Tows just fine. Sits perfectly level. Wheel base is my shortcoming/downside along with reduced cargo capacity but load what we can in the TT and hit the road. Admittedly I haven't climbed any long steep grade hills yet but with the Hemi I'm thinking no prob. Run about 55-60mph and is comfortable.
