Leaving This AM, Quick ?

Hi,
This is our second trip in the new TT & TV. First trip we had a pull thru, this trip will be a back in. Heading to Show Low, AZ to fish

Question: We have an Equalizer hitch. The rv guy that installed it said we had to remove the bars on it to back it up.

Is this necessary?

Thank you!

The concern is that while you're backing it in, you'll need to perform turns beyond what the hitch can support.

Almost every campground I've been in has you stop at a registration desk when you arrive. I always took that time to pull my friction bar off (plus, it was quieter driving thru the campground). Even the campground that didn't have a registration - I usually got stopped behind someone trying to back in.

Play it safe. Remove them when you arrive at the campground like 'ependydad' suggest. I failed to do so one time and bent one. Take the 5 min and remove it.

Is it necessary to remove them if you have the Reese duel cams? I've backed in a couple of times with them on and no damage yet or am I just lucky so far?

IMO, it's quick and easy to remove them- so why not? (No snottiness intended in this response.)

Depending on how your bars are installed, it is certainly possible to turn the camper at an angle that will allow the bar end to "depart" the friction pad.

If you have the pad installed the correct distance from the hitch ball, the camper should hit the truck before that happens.

There ARE reasons to install the pads farther away than recommended (due to obstructions mounted on the A frame, so better safe than sorry.

I have a round bar WDH, and the tech that did the PDI said to only remove the friction bar. He didn't mention removing the round bars.

Assuming you are referring to the Equal-i-zer (4-point) hitch (some people refer to all WDHs as an "equalizer") than you do not need to remove the bars.

Again, this is for the Equal-i-zer hitch.

I've had this hitch on several campers and only removed the bars when I needed to keep the peace such as coming in at night or when I know there was a very sharp turn that I would need to make backing up. Otherwise, I always leave them connected.

Same here. Have never had a problem backing with them on. Also, it would really be a PIA to have to stop and jack the unit up high enough to get them off.
