Lippert 1621

Anyone have any issues with the lippert 1621 extended pin box hitting the side rail of the truck? I am going to take delivery of a Coachmen Chaparral 279BHS this weekend and am worried of how long that thing is.

The rule of thumb is, once connected, on level ground, you need 6 inches of clearance between the trailer and the bed of the truck. Now as for the pin box, your bed is almost 5 feet wide, so 2 and 1/2 feet from pin to the side of the bed. Know this doesn't help much, but make some tight turns and backing maneuvers in the dealer parking lot, before you leave. Have them spot for you, (but don't believe them, look for yourself as best you can).

Ok, got the 279BHS. It hitches up good, and box to trailer clearance is good . However, I don't have my full turning radius. Enough to get around the corners, but at around 45 degrees, the pin box will hit the trailer. I may take a little off the pin box shroud to see if it clears the edge. I have to modify it anyway to fit the hitch plate for the superglide. Hope it works.

Did you mean the pin box will hit the truck?

That is really odd. I have the extended pin box, and no interference whatsoever. Do you have at least 6" of clearance between the top of you box sides and the camper? Is it just the plastic shroud hitting, or will the steel pin box hit as well?

Me too. Mine doesn't even come close. Can you raise your hitch and pin box get it out of the bed while maintaining ride hieght? My fifth wheel plate is only about 6" below the bed rails.

Mine doesn't even come close and my hitch is twelve inches from the bottom of the bed which is alot closer than my old truck which had it forteen inches from the bottom. the side rails are about 6" from the underside of the fiver. and I have had it past 90 degrees with no clearance issues at all.

Ok. Had it out and got it to about 70° at a campground. Heard a grinding noise and threw the steering wheel in the other direction. No damage, but I think I can fix this. The rig has a fiberglass shroud that covers the pinbox. The part that rubbed the side rail on the truck actually hangs below where the box bolts to the frame. I am going to trim the shroud when I get home and may test it again before putting it storage.

I had to cut the back of the pin box on my Cardinal to keep it from hitting the side of the bed on the truck. I used a sawzall and cut the square corner off on a 45.

I am going to pick my trailer up at the border in April. I bought a Reese fifth wheel hitch and the sidewinder. I was not going to put the sidewinder on till i get it home. I have a 09 F350 with 2.5" leveling kit and a 1" higher blocks in the back. I have box rails on my truck do you think i will be ok to hitch up with out hitting the top of the box rails? Not sure how this works it is my first fifth wheel trailer.

The dealer should be able to provide you with a couple of dimensions on that Wilcat, or something similar. The dimension from the plate to the ground (when the camper is level) and the dimension of the plate to the overhang of the camper. From those numbers, you should be able estimate where the hitch height in the truck needs to be and a estimate of the clearance between the overhang of the camper and the truck's bed rails. For the hitch height, you can assume 1 - 2" of suspension compression when hitched.

If it's a F350 4x4 with a 2.5" lift kit, I'd be pretty sure that you'll have clearance problems.

So how do you go about building it up so it wouldn't hit the top of the box rails?

1621

I have the 1621 on my Crusader with the PullRite super slide hitch and have no problems of the pin box hitting my truck. I took off the cover because it would not fit over the capture plate on the superslide. I now have a 5th Airborne pin box and if anything the trailer runs a little nose high but still no problem of hitting my bed or the back of my cab.

muzbomb, definitely remove the box rails. Much easier to do before you go than having to do it with the fifth attached, or after they cause some damage.

*For the Moderators*. Start a new post with post #12 as we've strayed far away from the OP question on the Lippert pinbox.

Muzbomb...reading your signature for your F350 with 2.5" lift kit, oversize wheels and offroad tires. I don't think that set-up will even fit under that 5th wheel overhang. Measure the height of your truck at the top of the tailgate and let us know.

Muzbomb...I mentioned getting some dimensions for you camper in a previous post. I have measurements from mine to use as an example.

Our camper is a 2010 Rockwood 8280WS
When level, the overhang to ground measures 58 1/2", the pinbox plate to ground measures 46 1/2".

Our truck is a 2008 F250 CC RWD
At the rear axle centerline, the top of the box to the ground measures 52 1/4". The top the hitch plate is 4 3/4" below the top of the box. Therefore, the hitch plate is 47 1/2" from the ground.

Therefore, with 1" of compression of the suspension, the camper is level with 7 1/4" clearance between the bed and the camper overhang (58 1/2 - (52 1/4 - 1)).

I believe that your Wildcat that's ordered would have leaf spring mounted axles. To raise the ride height of the camper, the normal modification is to remount the camper axles under the leaf springs (normal mounting is on top) which will gain 4 - 5" in height. If you were to contact the manufacturer, they may be able to do this modification when the camper is built. This modification is sometimes required to get adequate clearance on stock, late model 4x4 trucks. With your lift kit and oversize tires, this modification will probably not be enough.
