Looking at a Chevy 1500

I saw a couple of Chevy 1500 yesterday new for a good price with the options I need. The TV had trailer packages and 5.3V8 included but I was a little surprised to see that they only had a 3.08 rear axle ratio which appears to be factory standard for this power train. It is my understanding that the 3.42 rear axle ratio is better for towing.

I currently have a Roo 19 so I sure that it would not be a problem but would like to here thoughts on the 3.08 vs the 3.42 and why that is not an option for this power train. There is a big difference in the 2014 Trailer Life towing guide between the two but if that configuration is not available maybe the towing guide is in error.

father in law sold his Super Duty and bought a 2015 GMC 1500 4x4, I drove it and WOW lots of power for a 6 cyl and great ride. If I did not need a diesel a NBS 1500 would be my choice

I would want at least a 3:42, perferable a 3:73.

That 3.08 isn't as much of an issue with the 6 speeds gearing. It's more than likely comparable to a 3.45 and a 4 speed auto from a few years back.

I would check the payload numbers inside the drivers door and carefully check all towing specs. Also think about any potential trailer upgrades anytime in the next couple of years. Make sure if you are planning a trailer upgrade, then make sure this truck can handle the future needs.

I have a '14 Silverado that I tow my 3200BHT with. It has the 6.2 with the max tow package. IF you get one, get the 3.73 rears due to your only towing 9500# (6.2 4wd) or 9600 (5.3 4wd)with the 3.42 gears.

The actual tow rating changes for each gear option for the truck. I found that out in my owners manual, in my 07 the standard was a 3.42 I think, but mine came with upgraded 3.73 gear, this is about 1000lb more capacity, it is like 7500lbs for my 1500 with the 4.8 liter.
