I think you will find that any newer half ton pick up, properly optioned, will pull your 23ss. If you are sure you will not go bigger in the future, I would suggest staying with a 1500, but many have gotton the bigger bug and then had to go tv shopping.
Not knocking Ford or Chevy. My experience is with Ram. My 1500 hemi towed my 23ikss effortlessly. No sway, no porpoising, no out of control feeling. I ran a fastway e2 hitch with 800 lb bars. Typically 9...10 mpg pulling. From what I have read, other brands are similar.

Towing FR 2018 24WS listed at around 5200 lbs. dry, tongue around 672.
Had 2004 Titan LE 5.6 V8 and got around 10 MPG towing.
My wife hated it when engine shifted down and RPMs went up... but that is how gasoline engines in those years got their torque and power, high RPMs. Today's gas engines still do, but better transmission gearing helps.

So to keep wife happy we upgraded to a 2017 F250 SD 6.7 Power Stroke Turbo Diesel with tow package. Yep, was all the wife's idea! I was satisfied to wait a year or two.
16.3 MPG around town, and 10 -12 towing. Also upgraded to F250 because it can Tow and tow a bigger rig when we upgrade someday.
There are trucks that will tow the weight on paper... and then there are trucks that really tow.
Do you want a TV that can tow the weight or do you want a TV that is made to tow it? My wife's Nissan Pathfinder has all the numbers to tow this rig and can tow the weight... but is it made to tow such... only in Nissans mind!

It's a company that makes quick drain valves to make oil changes a little less messy and more convenient. Someone has it misspelled in their signature.

So just get the guy a new truck. I'm sure he deserves it.

I towed my previous Roo 23IKSS with my truck (2018 F150 Crew Cab, 6.5bed, HDPP, 3.73 gears, V8) and used to get average of 10 mpg @ 65mph.

Not touting one over the other, but that sentence baffles me. "Lacks power" is not my definition of "great".

I towed my ROO 23IKSS with a 2006 BMW X5 for 12K miles, then the same camper with the F150 for 1500 miles and the current 2909WS (9000 GVWR) with the F150 for 7000 miles (so far) and I never had a "white knuckle".
All 3 combinations handled very well.
There is way more to the towing stability than brute weight and wheel base length and honestly, for the weight level the ROOs are, any properly equipped SUV can tow safely.

What does power have to do with handling?

Get the one that fits your bum, all 3 make a good truck. I towed a 7000# TT with an F150 and it did better than any truck pulling a small / light trailer. The F150 turbos put the rest to shame on hills and at altitude. Gas mileage towing was not great but was great without the trailer. Now pulling 14,000# I get better mileage with the F350 than the little truck and trailer combo. Just make sure you meet the numbers and payload generally goes 1st.

5000# behind that beast is like a bale of hay in the bed of an F150.

In many situations I can think of, probably almost everything.

Why would that be? I have plenty of handling and power, and drive safely.

I'm losing this discussion, sorry. What is the point?

My camper is not as heavy as yours ~ 4,000lbs when fully loaded with water and full tanks plus camping supplies (its seldom fully loaded). With an F-150 5.0L V8, 3.55 rear axle, tow package, my most recent trip pulling my Micro-lite two weeks ago netted 12.4mpg (pencil/paper). My best ever gas milage not towing on a long highway trip with a pretty good tailwind 23.9mpg. I don't drive fast & tow between 55 - 65mph.

Have a 2013 ram 4x4 Mega cab 5.7 Hemi pulling a 2013 Rockwood 2608ws around 7000lbs over 32000 miles of Irving all over country in the past 4 years and average 11.2 mpg according the trucks computer. Unless you plan on a fifth wheel in your future. a 2500 3/4 ton tv will handle what you have with no problem. I can go thru mountain passes at 60mph with a/c on with no problems towing. Good luck in your choice of tv. Have fun safe travels.

I love these get the popcorn discussions. jbaginsky get what you feel comfortable with, I have a 2015 Ram Ecodiesel and it pulls my 2015 shamrock 23ss beautifully. I have an e2 800/8000 wdh and adjust it for each leg of my trip i.e. tv bed loaded before leaving home and then tv bed lighter when coming home usually 1 or 2 washers up or down on the hitch.

Almost forgot I get 14-16mpg towing and 25-27 around town. 4:10 gears and short box crew cab.

Test drive all brands and get the vehicle that is most comfortable for you and family. I am not brand loyal and have owned all 4 of big brand trucks.
Research Research Research. this forum gives great info and these campers truly give great opinions absorb them all then come to YOUR decision.
