Looking for a new tow vehicle, suggestions?

I'm looking for a new tow vehicle, something rated for around 9,000 lbs, but will fit in my garage, about 225 inches long. Although that would be plenty of vehicle for my current trailer, thinking ahead to our next one. Tow vehicle needs to be crew cab to carry my kids comfortably.

Currently looking at a 2008 ford f150 crew cab, this is the year before they changed the length to over 230 inches. Although I hate to go this old on a new to me truck, I'll try to find one with really low miles.

Is there anything out there that I might be missing?

I'm sure thats with trailer tow and looks like highest GVWR too. Without right options, towing just over 5000. Going to be a tough find if you have your heart set on fitting something in the garage

225 gives a couple inches cushion. 229 I'd be touching the wall.

Any thoughts on the Titan as a tow vehicle? I don't see much discussion here about the Titan.

Payloads are often low. I had a 2006 Titan King Cab, payload was a tad over 1,300. Power wise it was fine, that truck scooted but I think, IIRC, the rear axle was the weak link

This is the last year for the present Titan as they just showed the new 2016 Titan in Detroit. It seems to be a descent truck it is just getting old and I have read it is thirsty.

current gen Titans are fine tow vehicles but have the worst gas mileage of any of the v-8 1/2 ton trucks.
a close friend of mine has one and is always complaining about how bad the mileage is, even on the highway. i think his mpg highway is at best 15.

I just bought a 2005 F150 Crew Cab with 5 1/2" box 5.4,3.73 axle can tow up to 9600 lbs.
I would not be afraid of a 2008. The 5.4 is gonna do the job.
I had a 199 Expedition with the 5.4 about 55 less hp and it did fine.

Loaded up I was pulling about 6,300 plus wife 2 teens 3 dogs gear and my '99 did just fine. you can go to Fords website for more specs.

As long as you can verify maintenance records and that vehicle was kept up you'll do ok.
HAPPY SHOPPING AND GOOD LUCK ON YOUR PURCHASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Talk to a ford tech first for known problems. One of my guys here said something about spark plugs breaking off on the 5.4 and causing problems.

My understanding is that they solved that issue with the 3V heads which began, I THINK, around 04 or 05. I'd research and confirm. Also, it's not really a huge problem like when it began. First fix was to replace heads. Now most shops have a tool that can extract broken ones. Some type of threaded insert is then used and supposedly the issue is cured.

tow vehicle

I recently purchased 2008 f250 super duty 6.3 diesel. Tow rating is 12,600 lbs. I was fortunate to find one that was in great condition. My TT is 34' & approx. 9500lbs. I love my Truck!

just as a "disclaimer" I have never owned a truck until recently and am not
very knowledgeable except for looking at truck after truck, reading on the internet etc.

I discovered that there are many 150s'/1500s' out there, but they are all not the same. In my research, It became clear that there are many different set ups that make a difference in tow capacity. Engine, Transmission gear ratios, single axle, dualies etc. If you go to a dealership or on line you can find out what the set up is for a given vehicle from the information on the VIN. I'm glad that did some homework and talked to other people that had knowledge on this subject instead of just "winging It".

I am probably a bit overpowered, but it is good to know that I am not going to stress out my tow vehicle.

Bottom Line...Do what you are doing! Research & ask questions , You won't Be Sorry!

Thanks to all that post here ! I find out a lot of good Stuff.

Good luck.

We have used a 2010 Toyota Tundra (Towing weight 10,400) (GCVWR 15,500) to tow a Windjammer (@ 7500 loaded) for about 20,000 miles and before that a Dutchmen (@7000) for about 20,000 miles. Never a problem. Great truck. Average mileage @ 11 mpg when towing.
