looking for new tow vehicle

I'm on my husband's account and although I hate to get rid of our Lincoln Navigator, we really need a truck to pull our 34 foot Primetime travel trailer. The trailer weighs bout 7000 lbs. I have no idea what type of truck to buy and was wondering if anyone can help me figure out what type of truck will pull our trailer safely. We would like a four-door truck that looks nice and rides nicely and I plan to use it for my real estate business that I just started.

With a trailer that long you are in the 3/4 ton range for sure. Gas or diesel will be the question. I'm sure any of the gas 3/4 tons would do the job. So go look at some trucks and decide what you like the best. If you like one brand more than the other then start there.

Definitely 3/4 (2500/F-250) territory. If you plan on towing in mountains, go diesel for sure. Even if you don't, you will probably enjoy pulling that big trailer better with the diesel. But if you're not ready to make the leap yet, most of the gas heavy/super duties can be outfitted to pull that trailer.

Make sure you get either real weights of the trailer, or use the GCWR when looking at the appropriate truck.

Lincoln Mark LT? Just an idea based on very little knowledge of your price range, interest in used vehicles. They only sell new in Mexico (per Wikipedia).

Tongue weight

Pay attention to tongue load weight. When I was searching for a tow vehicle the F-150 looked great until I was close to maxing out the hitch weight.
As an example the 2013 Fords are rated as follows for Max. Tongue weight when equipped with a weight distribution hitch.

F-150 = 1130 LBS
F-250/350 Single rear wheel / gas = 1250 LBS
F-250/350 Single rear wheel / diesel = 1250 LBS with 2 inch receiver and 1400 LBS with 2.5 inch receiver.

This may bring some comments. I have a 2011 Ford F150 Eco boost FX4 package with the 3.73 rear end. Mine is rated to pull 12,500 lbs. I have heard about problems around with the eco boost technology, fortunatly mine has run like a charm for 2 years. I have a 2011 flagstaff 31.5 rear bunk double slide full length is 34ft. I have pulled our trailer for a few years and we did travel from Windosr Ont. into the smokies last year amongst several other trips without any problems at all. The one thing I like is I definetly do more travel around city then pulling and the gas mileage with the 6 speed, six cylinder is better then most alternative trucks although I am not sure what the new 8 speed dodge will bring. This 6 cyclinder is better on gas when not pulling then most 8's and that is what originally attracted me. Prior to this though I have always had Ford trucks so I am privey to them. Good luck shopping and I do think you should explore all products find the one you like best that is rated to pull your trailer. Don't bring it to max weight either, not a good idea.

IMO, it's all about payload and sticking within ratings. The newer trucks are quite comfortable and the crew cabs are generally as spacious as nice cars (our truck is way roomier than our compact-ish sedan (Hyundai Elantra)).

OP it depends --- if you are looking at replacing to address a specific towing issue or just because it is time. if there are specific towing issues - not enough power or over payload, nowhere to put the bikes etc look at addressing these first as they may limit your choice of platform.

Your TT is certainly on the larger side - 34 feet, UVW 7000lbs TW 700lbs --- I am sure the weights are higher when you hitch up ready to camp. That being said I would start with the list of specific issue with the current TV you don't want going forward then getting the minimum payload you need (ready to camp numbers). With those items you can at least get a starting point - ie a high payload or high tow capacity 150/1500 or if you need a 250/2500 minimum or a 350/3500 -- then you can decide what looks nice to you and what you consider a nice ride out of the vehicles that meet your base requirements.

Happy shopping

We went with a 2011 F-250 King Ranch 6.7 turbo diesel with 3.31 gears and 2100 payload. We had fist wanted 3.73 gears but with the way my wife drives 3.31 will give us a little more gas mileage. I know the 3.31 gears and payload will limit us for later upgrades. Pictures coming later.

Cool. You're gonna love the way it tows that trailer. That's a great truck. Of course, it's not real unless we see some pics!

With that diesel and your setup, you should be fine even with the 3.31s. Good choice and happy camping!

just bought same truck. Crazy strong. Added airbags and she hauls our 39 foot Wildcat 5th wheel with ZERO issues. You'll be looking to upgrade the size of that trailer to match the truck....LOL! Well done.
