Looking to upgrade my TV: F150 vs F250? Trying to plan ahead

Hey guys,

So far I've been towing our HW276 with my '04 Jeep Liberty. She tows it great, but I'm finally at a point where I can get a truck and want to make sure I am set up well for the future.

I'm not planning on upgrading our camper any time in the next few years, but there is a good chance we will in about 5 years. I also want to be able to put a golf cart (900-1000lbs?) in the bed of the truck.

I brought a 2013 F150 Platinum V6 Ecoboost 3.55 home for the weekend and love it as a truck, but the numbers don't seem to hold up when I look at it for towing. The sticker on the door shows max payload of 1183 lbs. I'm looking at that as: 1183 - family (500-600lbs) - tongue weight of the HW276 (300lbs) = 283-383 lbs of payload. Nowhere close to enough for a golf cart and not likely enough for a trailer with a heavier tongue weight.

Does it make more sense to go with a F250 at this point? That seems like it would give us plenty of room to grow in the future.

Also, for the golf cart, is the 8' bed required or is it safe to put it in a shorted bed with the tailgate down?

Thanks in advance!

May not be able to leave tailgate down for two reasons- first if you have a power jack tailgate most likely hit it. Second, the tailgate needs to be up for you to be able to turn. If not your trailer will hit the top of the gate.

if you plan on putting a golf cart in bed, there is no way you will be anywhere near payload ratings on an F150. F250 for sure and a long bed also. If crew cab is what you need or want, you can't get a crew cab 8ft bed half ton anyhow.

8 foot bed for the golf cart. If you can get by for now with out the cart I would wait on the new truck.

Please, if you are going to up to a 250 or 2500 add a few bucks more and make it a 350 or 3500 and be way ahead of the game.

Wise I had.

How lung is the cart gonna be (8 foot) bed?
You could go 2 wheel drive to cut some weight unless you need the 4X.

Expensive setup but I once saw a 1 ton dually with a cart lift in the 6.5' bed. It looked something like this:

It lifts the cart over the hitch/tanks so there is enough clearance - even in turns...

No need for the 4x and would prefer to not have it. I'm not sure i'd ever need the power of the 350...

The 350 has the same engine as the 250 so there is no power difference.
The 350 will just handle a little more weight and will allow for heavier trailers to come.

I think they mentioned the 350 because of the added payload over a 250, not the hp.

when I bought my 2014 Silverado 3500 Duramax, it was a few thousand cheaper than the 2500 it was next too. Few less high end bells and whistles, but way more capable truck. I've seen 1/2 tons that even cost more. Shop wisely and you can get a very capable truck.

What about the difference in the 6.2 vs the 6.7? Lean towards the 6.7 more tow weight?

Look at a 250/2500 or 350/3500 if you're thinking that there's a fifth wheel in your future.

The new alum bodied F150 will have more payload than the 2013 you've looked at. Consider something with less bling...the options with the Platinum really eat into payload.

Gas 6.2 vs diesel 6.7 is a whole nuther discussion!

Went to the dealer with this very thought in mind and of course came home with the Platinum. They're sure they're unloading it on me tomorrow, but the numbers don't come close to working.

I can only tell you that IMO the 6.7 is the way to go if you are going to tow.

Cab and chassis with flatbed? You'll also have ramp storage issues.

you can get a diesel 1 ton for less than a Platinum half ton.

I agree that options are costly in both dollars & weight... My '11 Ram 2500 ST 2wd is completely stock, but I have a payload of 3,000 lbs. & it only cost $14K (used) 2 years ago... I drive my 2wd in heavy Ohio snow & never get stuck (fiberglass cap & 800 lbs. of sand bags....)

Meanwhile some friends just dropped around $45K on a Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn. Nice leather seats, etc. but it only has a payload of 1,200. It's just-enough to handle their horse trailer but not much else...

My advice would be to go with the f 250 or f 350. I purchased an f350 diesel for my 29 ft tt and what a huge difference, all good. We also knew that we would upgrade our tt to a 5er eventually as we get closer to retirement in 5 years or so. Well guess what,5 years came sooner than we thought and are picking up our new 14 sabre 33ckts tomorrow
