Max size fifth wheel toy hauler towing with F250

I am getting ready to purchase a 2016 Super Duty F250 with 6.2L and tow package. Right now I'm towing 27rr Cherokee Greywolf . It will be no problem pulling. But I am looking to upgrade the 3.73 gear ratio to 4.3. What will I be able to tow (Fiver). The tow manual says up to 15,000. Yellow sticker Load capacity on truck is 2964. Anyone have specific models they are pulling right now?

Everyone has different needs. For the 2 of us and 2 pups the SOB in my signature is fantastic. Not so much if there were rug rats. Just 35' with 3 slides. Loaded around 11,500 and 2240 pin. Not a "lite" model but certainly not overly heavy. Lots of options included. Now ~~ to find one that fits YOU.

Thank you. I really like that model and looks like it would work. Not ready to upgrade yet. Just long good options before I pull the trigger.

If you add a 200lbs driver and 150 lbs passengers plus a hitch Tow Planner says this is what you have left over.

You're adding approximately 600 lbs. to the truck. You have 2,364 lbs. of payload capacity. Fifth wheels typically have 20% - 25% pin weight which gives you a maximum loaded camper weight of 9,456 - 11,820 lbs.
Towing Calculator based on Truck's Payload/CCC - Towing Planner

That being said toy haulers are different animal than standard 5er so what affect the garage has on over all pin weight. If you have not purchased your truck yet it I would look at F350 to gain some wiggle room on payload.

Biggest issue with toy haulers is the empty pin weight.

In order to be able to be balanced when loaded, they have a very heavy pin when empty.

I would also look at a 350. I have a '15 250 and we're tossing the idea around of a 5'er toy hauler also. I'm finding the limiting factor is the pin weight, not trailer weight. One of the trailers we're looking at is the Spartan 3210 with a dry weight around 11500 and empty pin weight of 2500-2600. I know once loaded with a 1000 lbs of Harley or atv's, the pin weight will drop since the garage is totally behind the axles. Per Ford, my max trailer weight is 15,100 with a 5'er, so I'm not worried about that. With a diesel in not worried about going, it would be stopping and overall stability.

A '15 F-350 SRW would only get me 600 extra pounds of trailer, but would leave more wiggle room for the pin weight with the higher rear axle rating. Don't know that it's worth the extra expense for me to buy a new truck. If the 5'er won't work, we'd probably keep our current trailer and wait on the class A or C that we plan to buy in 6-7 years or so.

My yellow door jamb sticker says 2150, even with the optional 10k GVWR package. My neighbor has the exact same truck in a 350, his says 3420 with an 11500 GVWR. My rear GAWR is 6100, his is 7000.

Another way to determine if your truck will safely pull a given 5er is to ask a salesman at RV dealership. They are very knowledgeable about such things.

When I bought my new truck, there was about a $2000 difference, between the F250 and F350 SRW - and the 350 gave me greater payload and GVWR...

They are basically the same truck - but legally, you can run heavier with the 350...

That said - any kind of serious toy hauler will likely move you into 350 DRW territory...

Where are you guys getting this 15000 lbs at, for the F250 towable weight? I've got a 2014 F250, and it's only rated for 12500. With the same 373 gears. This 12500, is also from Ford, per theit towing chart

Tow manual says 15,000 with 4.3 gears instead of 3.73. Weird there is that much difference?

My bad. I now see where you said you were upgrading the 3.73 to 4.3. That is a big difference in the weight allowance. I too, would like a 4 season toy hauler, but most of them are in the 14000+ range. And the problem with the light weight toy haulers, is that thet aren't built or warrantied, as a 4 season, full time living, RV

LOL, sadly that is true. If it were up to most of them, we'd be towing 42 footers with an F-150. I actually heard a salesman tell a guy once, "you have the max tow package, you can tow anything on this lot." When I saw the guy alone later, I said look closely at your owners manual, an F-150 won't go much over 9-10K if you're lucky.

Exactly. The 09 F150 I had, with tow package, was rated for 8200 lbs. But yet these manufacturer's keep advertising these half ton 5'ers. Half the F250's running up and down the road are towing more than the 12500, that they're rated for.

Gross Combined Weight Rating

GCWR.....GCWR.....GCWR
Weight it....Know it.....Don't overload it
You will pay a fine, one way or another.

More often those 5ers are putting any 3/4 ton truck over payload, especially those with a diesel. Payload is the only reason I traded up to an F350. The axel ratings are close on many as well. My F250 did the job ~~ excelled even. The payload number had me uncomfortable and watching my load. No longer concerned, added a 2nd battery and if my wife decides on the washer/dryer there will not be a 2nd thought.

Without specific details, your statement isn't true.

For the past few years, the F250 and F350 (SRW) are identical except for the blocks.

Same spring pack, same overload, same rear end, same axles... etc.

Not real scientific but compared my 3 month old f250 diesel with a f350 that was on the dealer lot and the f350 had an extra spring that I would call an overload spring in the past.

Without knowing how the trucks were optioned; something like one having the camper package, and one not; would explain the different spring configurations...

All things being equal, the difference is a 2" block vs. a 4" block; and the sticker...
