My TV puked out on me

Headed out Friday 4/01 and was heading up Mt Graham and my truck started losing power and running rough, just about didn't make it to a spot to turn around. All the needles were right - temp was good but the engine was hunting at idle like the fuel trim was all over the place. No check engine light on.

This mountain has an elevation change of 3500' at the bas up to 10,500 at the top.

Got turned around and headed down and when we got back in the valley the truck ran fine. Had a straight stretch on Hwy 70 where I laid into it and was moving out real well.

Truck is a 01' F150 5.4 with 200K miles that has done me good service since I bought it in 09'. So I am looking at newer used trucks and trying to figure out if I can fix this one enough to get one more year out of it.

What gear were you driving in?
Air filter restricted?
Timing issue?
Last tune up?

Check Engine light didn't come on? Does the Check Engine light come on when you start the truck? If the light is not working it still will store the codes. Sounds fuel related (not enough fuel pressure from fuel pump or fuel filter getting clogged). These days we all know it could be a million things. Have the codes checked out at AutoZone it might of stored something.. Good Luck...

1st thing 1st I would run a good fuel treatment through it if its running fine at the lower elevations, then pull your plugs, get a compression test and if the #s are good, a full tune up.
You may find that the plugs are the factory originals and the gap is 4X what it should be....seen it more than once...
Our TV has 204K and would leave in the morning for the other side of the world....

I had gotten into some 10% switchbacks and pulled it down into low just before it started acting up.

New air filter recently.
New fuel pump and filter in January
Plugs do have quite a few miles on them though.

Heck of it is I am a master mechanic and work on this stuff for a living. Wished I could have had my scan tool and laptop right there. When I got it home I scanned it and it showed no codes and was running fine.

I would try changing the fuel filter and run a tank or two with Chevron Techron fuel treatment in it and try again. Also, have you checked your air filter in the last couple of years?

I would agree with Techron (unless you use Chevron or Texaco fuels) or even a can of Sea Foam. At first I would have said the barometric sensor or mass airflow is going bad; and I say that from a personal experience with a vehicle that did the same thing. But if no codes that sort of rules that out since most modern computers are good at monitoring the sensors.

That's kind of where I am going right now on the baro or MAF because it was running way too lean.

Looking at a new F150 5.0 w/tow package right now. This truck has served me well but at 205K miles maybe it's time for a newer truck. This truck is an XLT Lariat with a lot of nice features but DW says let's go new.

A wise man would not argue with mama, especially if she utters the words "new truck"....

Do not ask question, put on the shopping duds and go.

I'll agree with Ford Idaho, even though I am not married. Many of my friends would have been at the store signing if their wives had said, "go by a new truck."

Suspect Ice formed in fuel line or Carb/Injectors at the elevation you were at going up the mountain.

Would it be cold enough for ice?

I would guess not, but who knows. I know Loveland pass, 11991, is reporting 51 degrees F.

On the serious side.. I'm wondering if you might be using an after market air filter like a K&N. Those have been known to restrict air flow at elevation.

On a vehicle that old, check into the oxygen sensors too. On the return trip from picking up my previous TT, my previously-running-well Chevy Blazer fell flat on its face about 40 miles from home and it was an oxygen sensor. The sustained load greater than anything it had ever experienced before tipped it over the edge.

When I was flying from Eugene, Oregon to Kansas in a Cessna Titan 404, I was topping the Rocky Mts and lost my left engine when moisture in the wing tank froze into little balls of ice and stopped up the fuel line to the engine. Couldn't restart the engine till we were on the ground in Nampa, Idaho for two hours and had poured Iso. alcohol into the wing tank. It gets cold at 12,000 ft.
Anytime I haul the TT through high mountain regions, even if it's summer, I add Sea Foam to the fuel tank. Not taking that chance again. Ice can form in the carb mouth even if not below freezing. Pilots of small aircraft are taught to add carb heat [tee handle] when reducing the throttle for landing to keep ice from blocking air to the engine. Private Pilot 101.

I have had the Ford modular engine V8 coils cause misfire/rough at times and throw a code, but at other times, principally under acceleration, also cause a misfire without throwing a code, as it it so intermittent.
Also, I have seen the Ford plugs foul/blow by on the side, burning up the electrode, if they weren't torqued to spec when replaced. This will also cause the coil pack on that cylinder to fail. The symptoms are usually only under a load or acceleration while in overdrive.

Let us know what you find out...and/or enjoy the new truck shopping.
