I got lucky, the County placed a low value on my 2017 Surveyor so the taxes are cheap. NADA books don't have many of the camper models listed so IMO tax evaluations are very subjective.

I can't speak for NC, but I live in PA which has a similar structure. Technically I should tag my 3500 drw for a GCWR of between 24,000 and 26,000 to pull my cedar Creek which is $510 every year or something in that range. I have it tagged for 13,000 pounds (GVWR) and that is $308 which is still on the silly side. Being as how I have never pulled into a weigh station and don't plan on starting (most are of the opinion that only commercial vehicles are required to), I will take my chances. Or at least until I get caught. Then I will whine some and maybe really think my tag.

In NC you have to cover the weight of the truck and any trailer you plan on hooking to it except for rv trailers. That weight doesn't have to be included.

Just move to Maryland. To register your vehicle, albeit a car, truck or trailer.....bring your weighted checkbook, bend over, smile and leave a lot lighter. They have the monopoly.

I was told by a DMV officer we do not have to have them for private, non-commercial trucks. I have them on both my trucks but I use them for my landscaping business and they are insured by my business.

Yes, its supposed to cover the entire weight of your rig: truck + trailer. But many of us with big fifth wheels are over 26,000 lbs. That means we'd have to get a CDL when we got our tags.

My F350 and Vengeance weighs around 27,000 lbs. combined and my tags are rated at 15,000 lbs. That covers my truck and equipment trailer.

By the way: My tags cost me around $400/month. Over 20,000 lbs. and you're well past $500 or more every year. Get more proof before you go there. Its not worth it in my opinion.

Was just at NC DMV yesterday to renew my registration for my 2500 Dodge Ram it clearly states that your tag must be weighted for the weight of the truck plus the weight of the trailer being pulled. This includes travel trailers, fivers, toy haulers, hay trailers, landscape any trailer being pulled. If you are pulled over and wait you are subject to a fine if you are over on weight

And yet ALL those snowbirds, and a bunch more of us really, are going through NC without 'weighted tags'. So it sounds like just a revenue thing to me..........

I asked a group of troopers having breakfast a few months ago. One smiled and said "Unless you do something stupid, you will never be pulled over". Another to keep the weight down as even if you would get a ticket if you got by 2 years you are money ahead. So, never really got an answer~~ tagged at 11,000.

Many of us have been told by people such as DMV officers, state troopers, etc. But when its in writing, things change. I still think its worth the risk versus getting a tag rated at 27,000 lbs.

Think about it. A guy has a one ton truck as his daily driver. But 2-3 times per year, the family loads up and he pulls the camper to the beach. But because of those 2-3 trips, he now has to pay well over $500 every year to get his tags renewed. Add on the property tax they now include and he's coming off close to $1000 just to license his camper puller.

Not mine, I'll keep my truck tags at 12,000 lbs and that's a stretch. I doubt if I'm anywhere close to 26,000 lbs. Besides which CDL do you apply for in NC? There are two kinds, one for driving in state and one for driving out of state.

Virginia is the same way. .......The truck and the trailer weight have to be included on the truck. My truck tag is 21,000 lbs for $75 annually the camper was around $100 for a permanent tag. I also have a 11,000 lb gross car hauler trailer that was around $100 for a permanent tag as well.

I have found out here in Virginia DMW clerks and State Troopers do not always know the weight requirements either.

Trooper also told me no other state is going to care what you price your tags at, only your home state and unlikely to find one in most states that care either. Some states push it like CA he said but rarely on out of state tags.

One advantage to owning an Excursion is I can pull 12,000 lbs and the truck weighs 8500 lbs and weighted tags are not needed.

No CDL needed for personal, non-commercial RV. But how do you figure your tags are OK? I'll bet that Cedar Creek alone weighs 12,000 lbs. Add the weight of the truck and my guess is you're pushing 20,000 lbs. I'm with you on not wanting to get bigger tags. Its a rip-off. But when you're hooked up, you are waaaaay over 12,000 lbs.

The truck alone puts you over the requirement for weighted tags.

Y'all do know that the U.S. Constitution allows free travel between the states, right?

I can understand greed, which I'm sure covers this, but:

I don't understand why you would be required to use the weight of the truck AND the RV when buying truck tags. Seems you'd cover the truck with the truck tags (truck's GVWR) and the RV with the RV tags (RV's GVWR). So other than greed, this doesn't make sense to me.

You are probably right about being over 20,000 lbs but we will never know, unless somebody steals my camper and truck and scales it
