Need reserve fuel

I have a F350 with short wheel base and so far I can't find a larger fuel tank that replaces my standard 27 gal tank in the short wheel base of 143.5 inches Super Cab. So my options are in bed tanks but didn't really want to do that since I have a short bed truck.

What I think I going to do is buy two yellow 5 gal diesel cans and bungee them together and carry them in the back of the truck. I know that if diesel sits to long it goes bad but do you think I could leave diesel in them for summer months? Normally we stop ever two hundred miles anyway but we are heading to Tucson next month and don't want to run of diesel.

Why couldn't you just use the fuel you put in the cans once a month and just replace it at your next fill-up to avoid having to worry about it going bad?

Did you look into Transfer Flow Inc? They make a variety of replacement and in bed fuel tanks.
If you go with the fuel cans, empty them into the fuel tank periodically when you stop to refuel. Top off the tank and fill the cans with fresh fuel. It takes a little time but it is a cheap solution to your problem.

I was concerned about running out of fuel while pulling the trailer across MT and ND last summer but I don't think we ever went more than 150 miles without passing a gas station.

I would recommend a Transfer Flow Aux fuel system (around 40 gal) but that may be more than you want to spend (around 1200). You may want to check with them to find out if they make an additional underbody fuel tank or a bigger replacement tank. For long term diesel storage there is a product called KILLEM biocide that will kill bacteria in diesel fuel.

I replaced the stock tank with a Titan 50gals on my F-350, it fit under the bed. You can reprogram the computer for the fuel gauge and to show correct distance to empty. At 25gals you will be making a lot of fuel stops. They sell for about $1,300. It was a lot easier to refuel at the end of the day after I unhooked the trailer, didn't need to stop during the day for fuel.

I love the Titan and Transpher flow systems but I found that I had enough fuel to get between pee breaks but I have 36 gallons.. My 1500 had 22 gallons so I know what you mean about needing to stop every 200 miles!

I keep a diesel can in the truck for those tight spaces where I cannot hit a truck stop. I fill it up at the start of the season and empty at the end. Diesel does go bad but it will stay safe for more than just a camping season.

Ordered in my new truck with the 32 gallon tank option. I sure miss my one ton 74' Scottsdale 454 with dual switchable tanks.
