Need reserve fuel

I have a F350 with short wheel base and so far I can't find a larger fuel tank that replaces my standard 27 gal tank in the short wheel base of 143.5 inches Super Cab. So my options are in bed tanks but didn't really want to do that since I have a short bed truck.

What I think I going to do is buy two yellow 5 gal diesel cans and bungee them together and carry them in the back of the truck. I know that if diesel sits to long it goes bad but do you think I could leave diesel in them for summer months? Normally we stop ever two hundred miles anyway but we are heading to Tucson next month and don't want to run of diesel.

Why couldn't you just use the fuel you put in the cans once a month and just replace it at your next fill-up to avoid having to worry about it going bad?

Did you look into Transfer Flow Inc? They make a variety of replacement and in bed fuel tanks.
If you go with the fuel cans, empty them into the fuel tank periodically when you stop to refuel. Top off the tank and fill the cans with fresh fuel. It takes a little time but it is a cheap solution to your problem.

I was concerned about running out of fuel while pulling the trailer across MT and ND last summer but I don't think we ever went more than 150 miles without passing a gas station.

I would recommend a Transfer Flow Aux fuel system (around 40 gal) but that may be more than you want to spend (around 1200). You may want to check with them to find out if they make an additional underbody fuel tank or a bigger replacement tank. For long term diesel storage there is a product called KILLEM biocide that will kill bacteria in diesel fuel.

I replaced the stock tank with a Titan 50gals on my F-350, it fit under the bed. You can reprogram the computer for the fuel gauge and to show correct distance to empty. At 25gals you will be making a lot of fuel stops. They sell for about $1,300. It was a lot easier to refuel at the end of the day after I unhooked the trailer, didn't need to stop during the day for fuel.

I love the Titan and Transpher flow systems but I found that I had enough fuel to get between pee breaks but I have 36 gallons.. My 1500 had 22 gallons so I know what you mean about needing to stop every 200 miles!

I keep a diesel can in the truck for those tight spaces where I cannot hit a truck stop. I fill it up at the start of the season and empty at the end. Diesel does go bad but it will stay safe for more than just a camping season.

Ordered in my new truck with the 32 gallon tank option. I sure miss my one ton 74' Scottsdale 454 with dual switchable tanks.

The diesel will last longer than gasoline with ethanol in it. Only time I have really seen diesel go bad is tractors that don't get used much.

I looked at aux tanks or a replacement tank but couldn't justify the money. So I got three 5 gal yellow cans for $30, fill them before a trip and use them to top up after I get home. So far, I've always had the full 15 gallons at the end of the trip but its a good feeling to have it just in case. I always have a tote box of tools at the front of the bed and the three cans just nicely fill the bed on either side with the bungees through the handles and over the tote box.

Tfort is right. Diesel won't go bad in a month or two or six. I tested fuels for 5 years and Diesel should last a summer or more before you should be concerned about the fuel.

There are several styles of aux fuel tanks that will not take up bed space. One replaces the spare tire the Titian spare tire tank 30 gallon, and the other one is a titian side kick tank 15 gallon, that sits next to the fender wall and over the tire hump in the bed. Or you could go for the entire replacement tank under the bed of the truck which could be a 50 gallon capacity.

I got a quote on the 15 gallon sidekick at 1000 dollars installed and I really don't like the idea of replacing the spare tire. All the tanks that replace your stock tank says F350 Crew Cab and when you call they say that it will not fit the 143.5 wheel base super cabs.

Guess it going to be a couple of yellow diesel cans for 21 bucks a piece.

Thanks....

Check out Northern Tool. They have a 30 gallon aluminum aux tank and the flow through to connect to main fuel spout. I found mine on craigslist. $275 total including spout flow through. Now have 57 gallons and approx 475 mile range towing. I added a ball shut off valve when I do not want to use that fuel. On trips I fill both tanks and leave open. DTE calculation stays put until the aux tank is empty, then starts to drop.

I've got a 50 gallon transfer/toolbox that I paid $495 from Tractor Supply and added the hoses, $45 pump, $25 filter and shutoff valve myself. I looked at the Titan prices and couldn't believe anyone would pay those prices! This gives me 86 total gallons, so I don't have to be hunting truckstops nearly as often.
It gives me peace of mind to know I will have enough fuel to get through any unforeseen emergencies on the road. Got caught going across the FL panhandle right after a hurricane had knocked out all electricity and no gas stations had power. Restaurants closed, refugees everywhere hunting for food and a place to stay. Very scary That won't happen again!

I didn't go through Craigslist but I've got the same setup and experience with mine. Eliminated fuel stops in route and there was no need for recalibration of on board instruments.
