Presently we have a Surveyor 264 tt that weighs 4200 empty. Our 4wd Yukon pulls it fine fully loaded. Recently, we saw a 30 tt that has rear king bed and front kitchen and weighs 8000 lbs.
The problem is the combined weight of the empty tt and the Yukon is 11,000 lbs which is max for the Yukon. So we're now looking for a 2500 truck; hopefully, a GMC Duramax. A used one is fine since I won't use for much else.
The bigger truck also opens up 5th wheel possibilities. We would prefer a crew cab which has a 6'6" bed. My question is does the shorter bed pose a problem with a 5th wheel? Also what is the max weight that a 2500 could handle with a 5th wheel?

If you get a Flagstaff or Rockwood 5er, they come with the Reese Revolution Sidewinder hitch and will work great with a 6.5' bed. I pull with a 1500 Silverado Ext. Cab with a 6.5' bed.
every truck is a little different. You need to pay attention to the payload sticker inside the drivers side door and learn what the rawr is. if you are thinking possible 5er in the near future I would skip the 2500 and go for a SRW 3500. We currently are stuck with an F250 diesel that apparently isn't HD and so it only has 1400 lbs payload and 2400 lbs left on RAWR. that puts me out of the running for towing a 5er. not All 3/4 tons are like this but some are so check the numbers carefully on each on that you look at.

Don't buy a TT or fiver based on the hitch!!
If you are thinking about a future fiver, buy it now and buy a nice one.
You can put a nice hitch on a turd and you will still be towing a turd.

I've seen sliders in shortbeds. Interesting, but more stuff to break maybe? Twisty and Coot would know for sure.
Also something I learned the hard way a long time ago (and recently, unfortunately) - wait and get what you really want instead of what you can afford now, and don't go cheap.
