I wonder how it really will be towing. Diesels are heavy generally so how will this affect the payload and such. I wondered the same thing about the Ram 1500 diesel, just never looked at the specs.

Looks like Toyota's using the same Cummins 5.0 as the Nissan. The 1/2 ton class is really changing with specs that rival or even exceed 3/4 and 1 tons of not that long ago. I read the Nissan Aisin 6 speed is the same as on the 1 ton Ram with the 900ft torque Cummins. Seems a bit hard to believe but maybe its true.

I think Toyota killed that idea.

I've read that Toyota has the option to use the same powertrain all the way through... but has opted out for now. I read somewhere that the Nissan/Cummins will use the same rear gearing that goes into the Tundra, now. It will also have bigger brakes and heavier suspension, 7-lug wheels, etc... like my old '02 F-150/7700 had. But, puts out about 300 lbs/ft less torque than my Ram, so I won't be rushing out to buy one. Next year they may surprise us with a higher torque number, who knows? I like what I have too much, anyway...

Edit... I do like their looks, myself...

Oh, one more question... can a 1/2 ton safely tow a 10,000 pound trailer?
Something like this might be a starting point (used but...TOYOTA LITE ACE TRUCK 0.85 ton )

Oh, and in my opinion... No, a 1/2 ton can't pull a 10,000# trailer, safely. Might pull it, but that safely part... I don't want to try that, myself.

It does seem there won't be much difference between the two trucks. Toyota owns 30% of Aisin so I would not be surprised to see it in their diesel Tundra. I'm more surprised to see it now in a direct competitor's truck. I probably not going to give up my 800 pounds of torque either but there's a lot of trailers you could pull quite nicely with these new diesels. Maybe even 10,000!
