NEVADA J Endorsement

So I went in today to do the vehicle inspection portion of my J endorsement test.

They refused to give me the driving test as they stated that my truck was not rated to tow the 5th wheel.

Truck: GMC 3500 5th wheel rated at 16,900 pounds.
Trailer: GVWR 16,500 pounds

They refused because the truck has a GCWR of 24,500 pounds and a GVWR of 11,000 pounds. They don't believe that truck is rated to tow the trailer as the GVWR of the truck and the GVWR of the trailer exceeds the trucks GCWR.

Additionally if I get another truck with a higher GCWR I need a Class A license instead of the J endorsement as the GCWR would exceed 26,000 pounds (11,000 + 16,500 = 27,500lbs)

Personally this doesn't sound correct to me. As the pin weight would be on the truck (say 3500lbs) you could never load the truck to the GVWR and still tow a trailer. It would be loaded to 7,500lbs. At this weight the GCWR would be below the trucks GCWR as well as below the 26,000lb limit for the class A vs. J endorsement.

Is my logic flawed?

Of course they pulled this information from the trucks user manual. The tester stated that some manuals only show the tow rating and don't show the GCWR at all. When that is the case they only look at the tow rating as they don't really care about the GCWR. But as the information is in the manual they can't ignore it.

So either I buy a new truck or I find a manual for the truck that doesn't show the GCWR.

Their flawed logic is assuming both vehicles will be at max (GVWR). The whole point of GCWR is to give an overall max combined.

If you aren't over either vehicle's GVWR and you aren't over the GCWR, you are in the right. Unfortunately, you can't prove it unless they weigh you... and you can't fight city hall.

What is with a special endorsement for an RV anyway?

Your truck would have to weigh at 8,000 to spec out for the max trailer weight. It probably does, and the trailer is probably not max weight, either. But if both are loaded to capacity, they are correct.

But I never heard of a J endorsement, so..............

So basically as the trucks GCWR is 24,500 and its GVWR is 11,000 a person could never tow even close to the trucks 5th wheel max tow rating of 16,900 as they assume that the truck is always fully loaded.

Sounds similar to our (PA ) non-commercial DL. Needed if the GVWR and trailer is over 26,000lbs combined (and the trailer is over 10,000lbs).

So picked up this monster yesterday.

Note that if you live in Nevada even this truck is not rated to tow the larger XLR Thunderbolts (even though the tow rating is ok). What a cluster.
