Never, Ever, get a 2WD Truck.
I'm old. Been around the block once or twice. Unless you are disabled. Never, Ever, buy a new truck without 4 wheel drive. New, the cost is minimal.
A 2WD is marginally good for maybe 10 states here in the USA. The rest want 4 wheel drive. And in those ten 'no snow' states, they still usually want 4 wheel drive as well.
I post this because it's so very very difficult it is to sell a 2WD truck.
Do yourself a favor. Get the 4x4.
And for GM, Ford and Ram... Just stop selling 2WD 3/4 ton and up trucks.

To me, a pickup truck is designed to "get stuff done", and you can't get stuff done if you don't have enough traction. I will never by a truck without 4wd, and I actually even take it a step further by insisting on a limited slip rear differential too. I don't need this traction very often, but when it is needed, there's no substitute.

Horsepower is worthless without traction! Snow, rain, sand, etc can cause a huge headache and kill a perfectly good trip. Nice to have that 4x4 when those moments occur and they will!

-4x4
-locking rear differential
-axle ratio that offers the highest tow rating.
-a factory brake controller (common now but it used to be something that was accepted as an add on)
-If a half ton, I make sure it has all the tow package stuff (trans cooler)
I check for these things before opening a door. Actually that 'door' has become the one to my house. I prefer to pull up the window sticker on line from the comfort of my desk...and arrive at the dealer to look at a specific truck or two.

Owned one 4 wheel drive and now all my trucks are 2 wheels drive with limited slip differentials . Never been stuck with with all my 2 wheel drive trucks. Yep go ahead and spend the bucks for something most people will never use. It's like giving the truck companies and dealers free money cause they just love to load trucks up to get more profit. Just cause you own a 4 wheel drive you thing everybody should and companies should stop building 2 wheel drive. What a joke. Ya and it does snow here with Ice also. Later RJD

I can go more places in a 2wd truck with a locking rear end than most people can go with a 4wd truck with open diffs.

I've been just fine with my 2 wheel drive trucks (3, including my current one). I will admit, I don't travel where it would become more of a concern. Yet. But where I am and where I am in my camping adventures, a 2X is working just fine for me.
And I suppose your statement "New, the cost is minimal." is probably somewhat true. When you consider the average price of the new trucks (diesel anyway) is around $70K, what's a few thousand dollars difference.
By the way, I sold my first 2X truck in 45 minutes after putting it on our local city "for sale" location (small town park). I traded the second one in for my current truck. I think it greatly depends on where you are.

My step dad only had 2wd trucks. Lived in North Wisconsin. We sat for hours debating this issue.
Mom later layed it out for me after he passed. He used 2wd as his excuse not to go anywhere when the weather was bad...

I too am sold on 4X4 vehicles. I guess you have to get in a place and then to get rescued by the 4WD assistance. I try to never get in that “place”, put it seems to happen a couple times a year. I used to deer hunt and if you drive to the area you needed a 4WD...or you could walk...then drag an extra 1/2 -3/4 mile assuming.
They make all types...get your choice.

I've lived in Florida for 66 years. I've visited many states in that time. Ive owned many trucks in that time. I have not or ever will own a 4WD. I do not deal with snow. I do not deal with mountains. I don't go mudding. I've been hauling boats and trailers for 45 years. I don't need 4WD nor am I gonna for the gas to haul all that unnecessary hardware around. If I lived in snow county or was a red neck, you bet I'd have a 4WD. As it is I'll keep hauling my boats and trailers with 2WD and paying for my TT with the gas savings.

I got places to launch my boat y'all can't find! And if you get there in a 2wd, you will die back there.
My wife drives a 2wd truck. She wants a 4wd, mind you! But she drives a 2wd.

Oh Geeze. If you have to have 4X4 then you better darn sure have a good reason to go out. Bring retired I just dont have a valid reason to take my dually out in snow. If I get in a situation I have chains.
Someone once told me the only reason you need 4X4 is to get farther than you should. At the end of the day you can pay the towing bill

I went hunting this morning...with aggressive tires and a locking rear dif I went until the truck would go no more in 2wd...4x4 saved the day and continued on effortlessly.
Had any of you 2wd with limited slip folks been with me this morning I would have had to get the tow strap out...
I'm not knocking 2wd...get what you want or need but 2wd with limited slip wont cut it for my use.

Pretty sure this sums it up on this thread. Glad nobody mentioned which manufacturer makes a better 4x4.

Never, Ever, get a 2WD Truck.
Also ------ Never, Ever, buy a pulled pork sandwich.
Sometimes I drive my little John Deere tractor through mud holes. There's nothing on the other side of a mud hole my truck needs to see. I don't/won't ever have a boat so I ain't skeert of boat ramps. I don't off-road. Too old? Maybe.

Sorry but I doubt that. Heard the same thing when front wheel drive cars first came out and radial tires. Come follow me.
