We've started looking - the expedition goes up for sale right after xmas and we'll need a new TV by april/may.

Leaning toward a 12/13 just on price. Plan to keep it about 10 years so if there is some major upgrade that is worth the extra cost (better mileage perhaps?) we'll consider that.

test drove one when I was outback shopping and loved it. I've been a ford person since '90 but am shopping everything this time around. I'm not a big fan of toyota's looks or nissan quality but may compare just because.

Got an 08 subaru outback 7 weeks ago and I like it better than than the newer design, but the new ones are bigger and get 20% better mileage (due to variable trans I suppose.)

I think the real question is "Are they going to improve torque for towing?" That's where the new model needs to step it up IMO.

Yes so much for the rumour about putting the 4.5 diesel in the half ton, that would have made it more of a contender for towing.

waiting for diesel in a half ton as well. i would imagine with the extra weight of the diesel, the rest of the frame/running gear would be upgraded as well, and may be an excellent choice for 5th wheel towing up to say 13000lbs.

but if they did offer one, i believe it would be at the major exspense of the 3/4 to 1 ton market.

If you get the 6.2 gasser 1/2 ton, torque is at 417 & 403 for HP...with a GCWR of 16000lbs, think that'll satisfy most non-diesel drivers

Yeah, but at what RPM? 400 lbs of torque is nice but you need it at 2,000 RPM; not 4,000 RPM. That's where turbocharged/supercharged engines provide a big advantage; whether diesel or gas.

I agree it's better to get all your 400ft/lbs torque at 2500rpm (Ford Eco) vs 4250rpm (GM 1500)...at the end of the day both gasses accomplished their task except more gas usage with the GM.
Towing under 10K, either choice would be fine, especially for weekend warrior campers who prefer a 1/2 ton truck for daily commuting when not camping.

With diesel prices $.80- $.90 higher than gas, and the cracking down of diesel particulate emissions, I doubt that the manuf. would want to take the risk of all the money spent and very little sales on a more expensive engine option, especially with a smaller diesel that would fit in a 1/2 ton probably only having 250 hp and 350-400 ft lb of tork. You wouldn't be much better than what you can get on a gas motor and at a higher price. Maybe a little better mpg like 3-5 mpg better but not the 10-15+ that everybody wishes for.

I read on a GM report that they have a design and prototype diesel for the 1/2 ton trucks...it's rated at little over 300HP & 525 ftlb torque. They mentioned the plan to roll them out is shelved for now until the economy gets better...interesting.
