It really is an eye opener. I thought my 1/2 ton was getting it done. This is a whole different thing.

Tow test #2 today. Still continue to be completely amazed at the difference between the 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton. Headed out for about a 100 mile trek to Carlyle lake in illinois. The truck itself really felt not much different than empty....meaning that everything felt real tight and not sloppy. The bounce was calmed down as opposed to the empty.....it didn't feel as nearly "springy" as the 1500 to quote my wife. She was right. Felt planted to the road in all directions. The power was excellent from the big V8. I did notice that pulling the hills it dropped to 4th and ramped up around 2800 rpm. Nothing really crazy rpm wise nor did I feel it was struggling at any point in time with the 7k load. I intend to do a complete review on all on a separate page. That phrase "I didn't even know it was there" I feel is a bit over used and mis leading...however....with the cruise set to 65 it was a much different experience for me and one might lose track of said towing responsibility's and for a moment "forget" there is 3.5 tons hanging off the rear bumper. So far very, very happy. Let's see where the numbers wash out on mpg at the end of the year. I suspect I will not change my outlook much.

I recently traded my 6.0 gasser for a 2015 Ram 2500 Cummins. No comparison between. Torque on the Ram is monstrous. First trip with the new TV was Labor Day weekend. Left on our trip, had to check my mirror to make sure I had to trailer with me.

I don't think I can get by with the RAM 1500 ecodiesel truck which would save me some money.
Forget the ecodiesel, the 5.7 Hemi 1/2 ton will tow more. The Eco is for one thing and one thing only, bragging rights on MPG's

I do agree...however that would make a fine hybrid or sub 6k rig. To each is own. Biggest thing for the 1/2 ton mopar breed is payload.

Have a little over 1500 miles on the truck and am continuing to be impressed. Took a long highway drive today through mid Missouri. Limit 70mph and the the computer calculated 17.6 or so. Hand calculated was a little lower at 17.2 miles per gallon. Pleased as punch at this point. Have yet to do any full throttle from a stop, imagine there would be no issue turning the tires over. Towing this weekend to Kansas speedway we will see how it does loaded down.Click image for larger version

3.73 is what I have. Also, I have found that the mpg is about .5 mpg better when running mid grade. This might be a fluke however.

Is it possible the 7 mph difference can pick up nearly an extra 2mpg??? I guess but it seems like a big % gain. My MDS was pretty active on the flats at anything below 70mph. The truck does seem happiest at 75-78 mph. Still below 2k rpms and in 6th gear.

There is a lot of folks on various boards reporting 17-18 hand calculated empty mpg with this set up as I have found out. Interesting info on this engine at plowsite.com. Many claiming to be done with oil burners after driving this truck. I'm impressed.

I have about 27k on mine .. Did a wood run around 450 round trip Monday and brought back a trailer with 3/4 of cord of Oak.. I averaged 20.2 mpg. Is it bad to say my truck makes me giggle.

I may have missed it but is your truck a 4x4 if not then that will explain some of the better fuel mileage. Nice looking truck and good choice for your needs. Later RJD

Unhappy

Cummins Diesel dilema! It seems that about 1-2 pints of DEF fluid had been added to the fuel tank! The water in fuel light came on while on the way to take it to a service facility. The plan is to have them drain the Filter and hope no damage occured. Has anyone had a simular occurrence or situation. I called the dealer and of course they tell me that a major fuel system repair might be in order or at least might have been compromised. I took the truck to a very reputable service facility and was advised that they sought that any significant damage occurred. They will drain the filters and worse case scenario drain the tank and change out the filters. Anyone else had any similar occurrence? I was planning on towing my 5th wheel for a camping trip in New England in two days!

Did you stop and drain the fuel filter when the light came on? It's a small lever at bottom of filter.
Let the water or def drain out before it hits the injectors.. I hope you haven't damaged anything. Good Luck

Thanks. Sure wish the dealer I was working with would have come through was really looking forward to this truck except it would have been only 2 wheel drive. I still like the 3.73 gear also. Later RJD
